Duplicate Items in Terraria Journey Mode

Research items and duplicate them from the Journey Power Menu in Terraria, plus what a Journey server and character need.

Updated 3 min read

Journey Mode lets you copy any item you have researched, as many times as you like. It is the quickest way to build, test and decorate without grinding for materials. This guide covers how research and duplication work on PC, and what you need for them on a server.

Checked against Terraria 1.4.5.8 on PC, October 2026.

What you need first

Journey Mode is only available with a Journey character in a Journey world. Journey characters can only play in Journey worlds, and Journey worlds only accept Journey characters. If your character was made on another difficulty, make a new Journey character first with Create a Terraria character.

On your own server, a Journey world is made from the Worlds tab with New world, setting Difficulty to Journey, then restarting the server. See Terraria getting started. The server side of Journey's permissions is in Enable Journey Mode on your Terraria server.

Open the Power Menu

The official Terraria wiki describes the Power Menu this way. The toggle sits under your main inventory slots, above the crafting menu. Duplication and Research are two of its seven functions. The others are Time, Weather, Personal Power Menu, Infection Spread and Enemy Difficulty.

Research an item

You can't duplicate an item until you have researched it. Per the wiki, research destroys the items you put in, and each item needs a set number of copies before it unlocks.

  • On PC, hold Shift and use or attack on an item to send it to the research slot, and it researches automatically.
  • Trashing an item also researches it. Since 1.4.5 the trash slot attempts the research for you.
  • A counter in the item's tooltip, or above the research button, shows how many more copies you still need.

The number needed depends on the item, so check the counter before you hand over a stack. Research progress belongs to each character, so a new character starts again from nothing.

Tip

Read the counter before you hand over a stack. It tells you how many more copies the item still needs, so you don't destroy more than you have to.

Duplicate an item

  1. Open the Power Menu and pick Duplication.
  2. Use the category tabs to narrow the list, or type in the search bar. The search matches item names and tooltip text.
  3. Pick the item. You can duplicate any item you have fully researched, as often as you like.

Duplicating an item gives you just one of it if you don't need more than that. An item that is only partly researched shows up in the menu, but you can't duplicate it yet.

Sharing research in multiplayer

Re-Logic's 1.4.5 notes say that researching items also adds to the research progress of your online team members. The wiki adds that teammates share fully researched items, but only those researched while they are in the world.

Warning

Re-Logic's 1.4.5 hotfixes closed several duplication exploits, including ones involving transformation mounts and placeable items. A trick from an older version may not work any more.
