Enshrouded roles, permissions and bans
Set what Admin, Friend, Guest and Visitor can do on your Enshrouded server, switch roles on and off, share passwords, and ban or unban players.
On an Enshrouded server, the password a player types when they join decides what they can do. This guide covers the four roles, how to switch them on and off, how to change what each one may do, and how to unban a player.
The four roles
| Role | Password (Startup tab) | What it can do to start with |
|---|---|---|
| Admin | Admin Password | Everything, including placing Flame Altars and kicking or banning players. Join with this one yourself, and keep it to yourself. |
| Friend | Join Password | Build in your bases, open chests, dig and gather. No Flame Altar changes. |
| Guest | Guest Password | Explore, fight, dig and gather. No building in your bases and no chests. |
| Visitor | Visitor Password | Look around only. |
Admin and Friend are always on, and their passwords are made for you when the server is set up. Guest and Visitor are off until you switch them on.
See and share the passwords
Open the Players tab, then Roles. Each role that is on shows its password behind dots: press the eye to show it, the copy button to copy it, or the pencil to change it in the Startup tab.
Both are also in the left rail of your dashboard: Your password (admin) for you, and Friends' password for everyone else. Copy invite there copies your server's name and the friends' password in one message for your group chat.
The game's first quest asks you to place a Flame Altar, which starts your base. Only Admin can do that to begin with, so join with your admin password. To let friends place altars too, switch on Move and extend Flame Altars for Friend (below).
Switch Guest or Visitor on
- Open Players, then Roles.
- Switch Guest (or Visitor) on. The server makes a password for the role.
- Restart the server. Players who join with that password get the role.
Switch it off the same way. Its password stops working from the next start.
Change what a role can do
- Stop the server. Enshrouded writes its settings file back while it runs, so these switches only work on a stopped server.
- Open Players, then Roles. Each role that is on lists five switches:
| Switch | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Build in bases | Place and remove building pieces inside a base. |
| Move and extend Flame Altars | Place, move and extend Flame Altars, which set where bases are. |
| Open chests | Use the chests and storage in your bases. |
| Dig and change the world | Dig, flatten and otherwise change the land. |
| Kick and ban players | Kick and ban from the game's Social tab. |
- Flip the switches you want. Each one saves at once.
- Start the server.
Passwords: the one rule
Give every role its own password. Enshrouded won't start when two roles share one. The Players tab shows a red The server won't start like this note naming the two roles, and the Console says it too:
[PYW] Enshrouded will not start like this: the Friend and Guest roles have the same password.
Change one of the two passwords in the Startup tab and start the server again. Passwords use letters, numbers, dashes and underscores: 4 to 64 characters, and at least 8 for the admin password.
Kick or ban a player
Enshrouded has no console commands, so kicking and banning happen in the game:
- Join your server with the admin password (or as a role you gave Kick and ban players).
- Open the game's Social tab and pick the player.
- Choose Kick to put them out for now, or Ban to keep them out.
Unban a player
Banned players are listed in the Players tab under Banned, with their character name and when they were banned.
- Stop the server. The game writes its ban list back while it runs.
- Open Players, then Banned, and press Unban beside the player.
- Start the server. They can join again.
