Valheim biomes in progression order
The order to tackle Valheim biomes, from Meadows to the Deep North, with each biome's boss and drops and what the Mistlands and Ashlands added.
Valheim's biomes are usually taken on in one order, and each has a boss. This guide gives that order, the item each boss drops for you to take onward, and what Iron Gate's update notes say arrived with the later biomes.
Checked against Valheim 1.0.20 (patch of 15 October 2026), October 2026.
The route at a glance
The first seven biomes are the ones that existed before 1.0, and the Deep North comes last. Boss powers are in Valheim bosses and Forsaken powers.
What the Mistlands update added
Iron Gate's Mistlands update (0.212.7) brought a new type of dungeon, more than 20 new crafting materials and more than 25 new weapons, armour pieces and tools. Examples include:
- The Wisplight, which moves the mist out of your way.
- The black metal pickaxe.
- The Sealbreaker, a key.
The update also introduced magic: you eat foods that give Eitr to use it. In Valheim 1.0 Iron Gate increased the mist removal range of the Wisplight, the Wisp Torch and the Mistwalker, and added mist removal to all Mistlands weapons.
What the Ashlands update added
The Ashlands update (0.218.15) added flametal weapons, which you can combine with gems (Bloodstone, Iolite and Jade) to turn them into magical weapons. The notes also warn that cinders rain from the sky, wooden build pieces can catch fire and the fire spreads, and lava covers large parts of the landscape. A Shield Generator was added too.
The waters in and around the Ashlands are boiling hot, and only the sturdiest ships can sail them. The Drakkar, added in the Ashlands update, is the ship built for it.
The Deep North
Valheim 1.0 (9 September 2026) added the Deep North as a new biome, along with a boss named Kall Fimbulbringer. Iron Gate's notes list more than 40 new weapons, 4 new armour sets, 2 new capes, 2 new trinkets, new tools and more than 30 new crafting materials. They also describe new mechanics: snow you must clear before you can build, a grappling hook, frozen seas and ponds, the Jotun invasion, and a chance to find alternate versions of earlier biomes at the outer edges of the world.
The Deep North is too new for a reliable gear route yet.
Using this on your own server
A biome update only generates its new biome in areas nobody has explored yet. Iron Gate said this for the Mistlands update and says it again for 1.0, and recommends a fresh world for the full 1.0 experience. Valheim server hosting has the plans, and How to make a Valheim dedicated server covers moving a world onto one. To make the climb easier or harder, see the presets in Valheim world modifiers on a dedicated server.
