Start a Minecraft SkyGrid server
Install BentoBox and the SkyGrid addon on Paper 26.1.2, set the grid height, block lists and area spacing, and let players start with /skygrid.
SkyGrid places a real block at every fourth position in each direction and leaves the space between as air. Players pick their way from one floating block to the next, and the blocks include hazards such as lava. The idea comes from SethBling's SkyGrid map. This guide installs the BentoBox version, which makes it a multiplayer game with protection and teams, and covers the settings you can change before players arrive.
Checked against SkyGrid 2.2.3 and BentoBox 3.23.4 on Paper 26.1.2, October 2026. SkyGrid 2.2.3 is the newest release, and its Modrinth page lists Minecraft up to 26.1.2, although its GitHub release notes name only 1.21.x.
PaperMC lists 26.1.2 as unsupported (support ended on 26 July 2026), and lists 26.2 and 26.3 as supported. This guide stays on 26.1.2 because it is the newest version on SkyGrid's own page. BentoBox 3.23.4 lists 26.3, but SkyGrid's own page does not list 26.2 or 26.3, so this guide does not cover them.
What you need
- Paper on 26.1.2. BentoBox 3.23.4 needs Java 25, and the panel runs Java 25 only on 26.x versions. In JAR Manager (under More in the left rail) pick Paper and Minecraft 26.1.2, then press Apply change (Change your Minecraft version or mod loader). Take a backup first, because it reinstalls the server.
- BentoBox, from the Plugins tab.
- The SkyGrid jar, downloaded from its Modrinth page or GitHub releases.
SkyGrid is a BentoBox addon, not a plugin. Do not install it from the Plugins tab, which saves into plugins. It will not load from there. It goes in plugins/BentoBox/addons.
Install BentoBox and SkyGrid
- Open Plugins, leave Modrinth selected, search
BentoBoxand press Install. - Open the Console tab and press Start. Accept the EULA if asked, and press Stop once the server is up.
- Open File Manager and go into
plugins,BentoBox, thenaddons. - Press Upload files and choose
SkyGrid-2.2.3.jar. - Start the server. SkyGrid creates its worlds and a folder at
plugins/BentoBox/addons/SkyGridwith aconfig.yml. - Run
bentobox versionin the console. SkyGrid should be listed.
Settings worth changing
Stop the server first, then open plugins/BentoBox/addons/SkyGrid/config.yml. If a change affects the worlds, delete the worlds SkyGrid made before starting again. They are named from world-name, which is skygrid-world.

Each line is a Bukkit material name and a probability, such asACACIA_LOG: 20. If a block cannot be placed, bedrock is used instead. BentoBox does not support changing them once the game is running.default-game-modeisSURVIVAL.
Playing
Players run /skygrid, or /sg. The first call creates their area, and later calls take them home. Admins use /sgadmin or /sga. Make yourself an operator in Players under Operators with Make operator to test.
create-area-on-first-login has enable: false. Turn it on and new players get an area without running a command, after a delay of 5 seconds. The file warns that if several game modes have it on, an area is created in every mode at once.
For challenges, levels and warps, add BentoBox's other addons the same way, by uploading their jars into plugins/BentoBox/addons.
If something does not work
- SkyGrid is not in
bentobox version. The jar is inpluginsinstead ofplugins/BentoBox/addons, or BentoBox had not made its folders yet. - Chunks load slowly or the server lags. Lower the amount of chests and lava-heavy blocks in
blocks. The file warns about glowstone and lava in the Nether. - Areas or worlds behave oddly after a settings change. The config says BentoBox does not support changing
start-xorstart-zmid-game. Put the value back, or do a full reset of the worlds and the BentoBox database.
