Reset the Nether and the End

Reset the Nether, the End or both by deleting the right folder for your Minecraft version and server software, without touching the Overworld.

Updated 3 min read

You can reset the Nether, the End or both without touching your Overworld. Each dimension is stored in its own folder, and the Minecraft Wiki says that deleting the folder resets the dimension, so every player-made change and building in it is undone. The catch is that the folder is in a different place depending on your Minecraft version and your server software.

Checked against Minecraft 26.3 and Paper 26.3, October 2026.

Find your folder

Check your version and software in JAR Manager, then use the matching row. Your world folder is world unless you changed World folder in the Config Editor.

Your serverNetherThe End
Vanilla or Paper on Minecraft 26.1 or newerworld/dimensions/minecraft/the_netherworld/dimensions/minecraft/the_end
Vanilla, Fabric or Forge before 26.1world/DIM-1world/DIM1
Paper before 26.1world_nether/DIM-1world_the_end/DIM1

The table assumes the default world. If your World folder has another name, use it in place of world, and for Paper before 26.1 the folders are <World folder>_nether and <World folder>_the_end. For Purpur, Folia, NeoForge, Quilt or any other software, open the File Manager and match what you see: a dimensions folder inside world is the 26.1 row, DIM-1 and DIM1 inside world is the Vanilla row, and separate world_nether and world_the_end folders beside world are the Paper row.

Minecraft 26.1 moved every dimension into dimensions inside the world folder, which is also how Paper stores them now.

Reset a dimension

  1. Ask players to log out, or at least leave the dimension you are resetting.
  2. Open the Backups tab and press Create backup. Create and restore backups has the steps.
  3. Press Stop on the Console tab and wait for the server to go offline.
  4. Open the File Manager and go to the folder in the table.
  5. Delete the folder, using Delete on its row. With the default folder names the panel asks for a typed confirmation, because it is part of your world.
  6. Press Start. The dimension is generated again the next time players enter it.

Do not delete the Overworld folder by mistake. On 26.1 and newer, the dimensions folder also holds the Overworld, in dimensions/minecraft/overworld, so open the_nether or the_end and delete that one.

On versions before 26.1, deleting the folders in the table works the same way.

Warning

On Paper from 26.1, each dimension's folder also holds its own paper-world.yml. Download it first if you changed settings there, such as Anti-Xray, or you will need to add them again (Stop X-ray cheating).

After the reset

  • Everything built there is gone. That includes bases, chests and anything else players put in that dimension.
  • The Overworld is unchanged. Players keep their Overworld builds.
  • The dragon. The Minecraft Wiki does not say whether a reset brings the dragon back by itself, so do not promise your players a fresh fight.

If you do not want players to reach a dimension at all, Turn off the Nether and the End is simpler than a reset. To redo only part of a dimension, use Reset or edit chunks with Amulet.

If it did not work

  • The old Nether or End is still there. The server was running, or you deleted the wrong folder. Stop the server and check the folder in the table again.
  • A player is stuck or somewhere odd after the reset. Move them with Teleport in the Players tab profile, or with tp in the Console.
  • You deleted too much. Restore the backup from the Backups tab. Create and restore backups explains how a restore works.
