Reset or edit chunks with Amulet

Download a copy of your world, delete chunks in Amulet Map Editor on your computer, then upload the edited world back to your server.

Updated 4 min read

Amulet Map Editor is a desktop program that opens a Minecraft world, lets you select chunks and deletes or edits them. Amulet says a deleted chunk is recreated the next time you load the area in game, so it is a way to reset one damaged or overbuilt area without touching the rest of the world. Amulet runs on your own computer, so you download the world, edit it there and upload it again.

Checked against Amulet Map Editor 0.10.65, which follows 0.10.64's support for Java 26.3, October 2026.

What you need

  • Amulet from its own site, amuletmc.com. Its site sells installers for your operating system, and its GitHub page explains how to run it from source. If you would rather use a free tool, Trim your world with MCA Selector deletes chunks too.
  • A Java Edition world. Amulet's FAQ says it edits Java from 1.12 and does not support snapshots.
  • Enough disk space on your computer for a copy of the world.

Download a copy of the world

  1. Open the Backups tab and press Create backup, so you can go back (Create and restore backups).
  2. Press Stop on the Console tab and wait for the server to go offline.
  3. Open the File Manager, select your world folder (world unless you changed World folder in the Config Editor) and press Download. The panel packs a folder into a .zip first, and it arrives as <folder>.zip. An older node can return a .tar.gz instead.
  4. Unpack it on your computer.

Edit this copy only. Never edit the live folder.

Delete the chunks

  1. In Amulet, open the File menu and choose Open World, then pick the world folder you unpacked. The editing happens in Amulet's 3D Editor.
  2. Use the Select tool to mark the area you want to reset.
  3. Switch to the Chunk tool. It draws a top-down view, with Min Y and Max Y boxes for the heights it shows.
  4. Press Delete Chunks. Amulet's own tooltip says this deletes the actual chunk and all the data in it, and that the game recreates the chunks the next time you load the area.
  5. Amulet asks "Do you want to load the original chunk state?". Yes lets you undo the deletion but takes a while. No means it cannot be undone.
  6. Open the File menu and choose Save. Amulet warns that nothing is changed in the world until you save.

The same tool has Delete Unselected Chunks, which keeps only your selection. Use it with care, because it removes everything outside the box.

Warning

Deleted chunks lose everything in them, as Amulet's tooltip says. Amulet's read-before-downloading page also says entities are not currently supported and should remain where they were.

Put the world back

  1. Zip the edited world folder. The zip should contain the folder, with level.dat inside it.
  2. On the Console tab, make sure the server is still stopped, then open World Import under Content and drop the zip onto Drop your world .zip here.
  3. Press Import selected world, then Import world. The import always installs the world as world and sets level-name to world, so use it only if your World folder is world. It renames your old world to something like world.pre-import-<date> instead of deleting it, so delete that folder in the File Manager later to free the space. Upload your singleplayer Minecraft world covers the import and large uploads over SFTP.
  4. Start the server and visit the reset area.

If your World folder has another name, or the edit is small, upload only the changed region files (r.X.Z.mca) into the matching region folder in the File Manager instead. Fix corrupted chunks and region files lists the folder paths for each version.

If something looks wrong

  • The area still has the old terrain. The file you uploaded was not the saved one, or the server was running while you imported. Stop the server and import again.
  • The server will not load a chunk. See Fix corrupted chunks and region files.
  • Amulet will not open the world. Check you picked the world folder you unpacked, that the world is closed in the game and other tools, and that your Amulet version supports your Minecraft version.
