Set up a Rebirth of the Night server
Install the Rebirth of the Night modpack on a Minecraft 1.12.2 server from CurseForge, with its server pack, memory and Java needs, and what players need.
Rebirth of the Night (RotN) is a heavily rewritten Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack with its own progression, bosses and night mechanics. It is published on CurseForge with a server pack, so the Modpacks tab can install it in one go. This guide covers the install, the memory and Java it wants, and what your players need.
Checked against Rebirth of the Night 3.3.4 on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge, October 2026.
What you are installing
The pack's CurseForge page lists 3.3.4 as the latest release, uploaded on 2 February 2026, for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. Each release is published twice: a client file for players, and a separate "RotN 3.3.4 Server Pack" for servers. The server pack is about 790 MB, so the install downloads and unpacks a lot of files.
Our panel finds that server pack for you. You do not download or upload anything yourself.
Several CurseForge projects have similar names. Pick Rebirth of the Night (RotN), not "RotN: BPG Edition" or "RebN Tweaked", which are separate packs.
Memory and Java
The pack's CurseForge page says RotN needs 4 to 8 GB of RAM and warns against giving it more than 8 GB. Your server's heap follows your plan and cannot be edited: it is the plan's RAM minus a small allowance. See How much RAM does a Minecraft server need? and the plans on /games/minecraft.
Java is chosen for you from the Minecraft version, and 1.12.2 runs on Java 8. The pack's own wiki also says players must use Java 8.
Install it
- Open the Backups tab and click Create backup if the server holds a world you want to keep. The install reinstalls the server, and the popup warns that your current world is replaced by the pack's.
- Open the Modpacks tab, under Content in the panel menu.
- Press the CurseForge source button, then search for
Rebirth of the Night. - Click Install on Rebirth of the Night (RotN).
- In the popup, leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to boot straight after the install. If the server has not accepted the Minecraft EULA yet, an I agree to the Minecraft EULA box appears once you tick that option, and you need to tick it too.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait. The server reinstalls, which can take a few minutes.
If you did not tick the start option, press Start on the Console tab.
What your players need
Players install the same RotN release from CurseForge, on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Java 8. The pack's install page at rotn.wiki.gg suggests about 6,000 MB for the client.
The pack's description warns that pre-generating the world may cause worldgen issues with villages and strongholds, and asks you to test those before going live if you pre-generate a multiplayer server.
Use the Players tab if you want a whitelist (Whitelist players and set operators).
Common problems
- The install says your plan's disk may be too small: the pack is large and needs room for the download and the unpacked files. Open the Disk Analyser tab to see what is using space, or look at a bigger plan.
- The server stops on its first start: read the Console log for the error. The 3.3.4 release notes say that the first time you launch the pack it will crash and that launching it again should work. They do not say whether that applies to a server.
- The server lags: watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail and read Why is my server lagging?.
- You want to leave the pack: open the Modpacks tab and use Remove modpack. A popup lets you pick the software and version the server reinstalls as, then hold Remove and reinstall until it fills. The pack's world is replaced, so keep Take a backup first ticked if you might want it back.
