Disable chat reporting on your server
Set enforce-secure-profile in server.properties and install FreedomChat on Paper or No Chat Reports on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.
Since Minecraft 1.19, the game signs every chat message with the player's account, and from 1.19.1 other players can report a message. A server cannot switch reporting off with one setting. A plugin or mod that strips the signatures is the part that makes chat unreportable, and a server.properties line lets players who use client-side stripper mods join.
Checked against FreedomChat 1.7.10 on Paper 26.3 and No Chat Reports 2.21.0 for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge 26.3, October 2026.
What each part does
enforce-secure-profile=falselets players join without a Mojang-signed key. The Minecraft Wiki's Server.properties page says that with it off, chat is left unsigned and cannot be reported. The No Chat Reports project, which maintains the tools below, says it does not disable reporting by itself, because players on a normal client still sign their messages and anyone can still report them. This guide follows the project, which is why step 2 exists.- A signature stripper removes the signatures before the server passes messages on. That is what makes chat unreportable. On Paper, Purpur and Folia it is the FreedomChat plugin. On Fabric, Forge and NeoForge it is the No Chat Reports mod.
Step 1: set enforce-secure-profile
The Config Editor does not list this setting, so edit the file.
- Open File Manager and select
server.properties, then click Edit. - Find
enforce-secure-profile=trueand change it toenforce-secure-profile=false. - Click Save.
Mojang's default is true. Do this step if you want players using a client-side signature stripper to be able to join. The plugin works without it, but those players cannot connect while it is on.
Step 2: install the stripper
Paper, Purpur or Folia
- Open the Plugins tab and stay on the Store view, with the Modrinth source button selected.
- Search for
FreedomChatand click Install. - Restart the server from the Console tab.
The defaults already rewrite chat: rewrite-chat is true in the plugin's own config.yml, which you can open from FreedomChat's folder inside plugins. The project README still calls the plugin configuration-free, but the file exists. The No Chat Reports wiki also asks Paper owners to check that rewrite-chat and send-prevents-chat-reports-to-client are both true. The second is false by default and makes the No Chat Reports client mod show its green secure-chat icon in the server list and chat screen, so change it only if you want that icon.
FreedomChat publishes one build per Minecraft version, which is why you install it from the tab, where the game version defaults to your server's.
Fabric, Forge or NeoForge
- Open the Mods tab and search Modrinth for
No Chat Reports. - Click Install. On Fabric the panel offers Install all (N) for the Fabric API it needs, where N is the number of add-ons it will install.
- Restart the server.
The mod stores its server-side settings in config/NoChatReports/NCR-Common.json. Its page says it can be set to require the mod on players' clients.
Vanilla or Quilt. The No Chat Reports project says no known method protects chat on a Vanilla server, and that its mod is incompatible with Quilt. Switch to Paper or Fabric in JAR Manager if you need this. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the switch.
What players still see
From Minecraft 1.20.2, players on an unmodified client see a warning that messages are not signed. The No Chat Reports wiki says removing it server-side may go against Minecraft's Usage Guidelines, and that a client-side mod hides it for the player who installs it. FreedomChat has a claim-secure-chat-enforced option that tries to hide the warning. It is false by default, its own comments say the warning may still show with it on, and they say it may violate Minecraft's usage guidelines, so leave it off.
Do not set online-mode=false to stop signing. It does stop vanilla clients signing, but it also lets anyone join under any username, and the No Chat Reports project does not recommend it.
If it does not seem to work
- The plugin shows a failed-to-load badge. Open Plugins, switch to Installed, and check the badge. The usual cause is a build made for another Minecraft version. Update from the Check for updates button.
- Players with a client-side stripper cannot join. Step 1 was skipped or not saved, or the server was not restarted afterwards.
- No Chat Reports does not appear in search. The Mods tab only shows builds for your loader and Minecraft version. Change the version in JAR Manager if no build exists for yours.
