Start a Build Battle server

Upload the Plugily Projects Build Battle jar from SpigotMC to Paper, set up plots with the in-game menu and run solo, team or Guess The Build games.

Updated 4 min read

Build Battle is a building game where players compete on their own plots. The Build Battle plugin from Plugily Projects adds it to a Paper server with solo, team and Guess The Build modes. Its official download is the plugin's SpigotMC page, which our Plugins tab does not search, so you upload the jar by hand.

Checked against Build Battle 5.1.8 on Paper 26.3, October 2026. The plugin's Spigot page lists Minecraft 1.8.8 to 26.3. The FAQ on its wiki still says 1.8.8 to 1.20, so trust the Spigot page.

What you need

  • A Paper server. This is a Spigot plugin, and Paper runs those. Vanilla has no Plugins tab, so switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
  • A world with building plots, and a lobby. The wiki recommends an extra world for the minigame maps, and says the plugins should run in a separate world on a server that also hosts survival or other modes (see Set up Multiverse-Core).
  • Enough plots for the mode you choose. Solo needs a plot with room for one builder, team needs room for two, and Guess The Build needs one plot per player with free space around it so the others can watch.
  • Operator status for whoever builds the arena, from the Players tab with Make operator. Operators get the buildbattle.admin.* permissions by default.

Install the plugin

  1. On your own computer, open spigotmc.org/resources/44703 and download the latest jar.
  2. In the File Manager, open the plugins folder and press Upload files. Choose the jar.
  3. Restart from the Console tab, then type plugins to check that Build Battle is in the list.
  4. Open the Config Editor tab, set Spawn protection (blocks) under World to 0, press Save changes and restart. The wiki FAQ says spawn protection stops players joining through signs.

Build an arena

Run these in game and replace <arenaname> with the name you want for the arena.

  1. /buildbattleadmin setup create <arenaname> creates the arena instance.
  2. /buildbattleadmin setup edit <arenaname> opens the setup menu. Follow its instructions, and run the command again after each one to reach the next.
  3. Run it one last time and click the rocket to validate the arena.

The commands also work as /bba for the admin command and /bb for the player command. Use /buildbattleadmin locwand to get the location wand for setting positions, and /buildbattleadmin addplot <arena> to add another plot later.

To mark a plot, select only the floor space: start at the first block on one bottom corner and go diagonally to the opposite upper corner. Everything inside that box is where the builder can build.

Let players join

  • /buildbattle arenas opens a menu of arenas.
  • /buildbattle join <arenaID> solo, team or gtb joins an arena in that mode. /buildbattle randomjoin picks a game that has not started.
  • /buildbattle leave leaves, /buildbattle stats and /buildbattle top <statistic> show statistics.
  • /buildbattle selectplot picks a plot in team mode, and /buildbattle guess <theme> guesses the theme in Guess The Build.

Staff can run /buildbattleadmin forcestart <theme> to start with a set theme and skip voting, or /buildbattleadmin stop to end the game they are in. /buildbattleadmin settheme <theme> changes the theme, but only for 20 seconds after the game starts.

If something does not work

  • Signs do not respond: spawn protection is still on.
  • A setup command is refused: the permission is buildbattle.admin.setup, which operators have by default.
  • The plugin shuts itself off: the FAQ shows the message "Your server version is not supported by us!" for an unsupported Minecraft version. Check the version in JAR Manager.
