Minecraft bamboo guide: farming and uses
Where bamboo generates, how to plant and farm it, what it crafts into, including scaffolding, planks and sticks, its fuel value and how pandas use it.
Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that gives you scaffolding, a whole set of bamboo wood blocks and a cheap fuel, and it is what pandas eat and breed with. Below: where to find it, how it grows, how to farm it and what you can craft from it in Java Edition.
Checked against the Minecraft 26.3 server data and the Minecraft Wiki, with the growth and fuel figures confirmed on a second wiki, October 2026.
Where to find it
Bamboo generates as scattered single shoots in jungle biomes, and much more densely in bamboo jungles. It does not generate in sparse jungles. Since Minecraft 26.3, it also appears in abandoned camps in bamboo jungles, and you can fish it up as junk in jungle biomes.
Plant and grow it
You can plant bamboo on grass blocks, podzol, mycelium, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, mud, muddy mangrove roots, moss blocks (including pale moss), sand, red sand, suspicious sand, gravel, suspicious gravel, or on other bamboo (a bamboo sapling counts). These are the blocks in the game's own bamboo support tag.
- Height. A plant grows up to 12 to 16 blocks tall.
- Light. The top of the plant needs a light level of 9 or higher to grow.
- Speed. At the default random tick speed, a plant grows about every 200 seconds on average.
- Bone meal. One use grows it by 1 to 2 blocks.
A freshly planted shoot is not solid, and flowing water breaks it. Once it has grown a block taller it becomes a solid stalk that water cannot destroy. Bamboo cannot be composted.
Harvest it
Any tool breaks bamboo, and a sword breaks it instantly. When you break a stalk, every bamboo above that block breaks with it, so cut from the top down if you want to keep the base growing. Bamboo breaks much like sugar cane, so a sugar cane farm design can be adapted to it. Water is not needed, though spacing the plants helps if you harvest by hand, because grown stalks are solid.
On a server, keep a farm inside the Simulation distance (chunks) set in the Config Editor. The panel describes it as how far mobs, crops and redstone keep running.
What you can craft
Planks open up the bamboo wood set, including doors, fences, fence gates, stairs, slabs, signs, buttons, pressure plates, trapdoors and the bamboo raft. Hanging signs and shelves are made from stripped blocks of bamboo instead of planks. Use an axe on a block of bamboo to strip it.
Use it as fuel
Each bamboo item smelts 0.25 of an item in a furnace, so four bamboo smelt one item. Crafting a block of bamboo into 2 planks first is more efficient: those planks smelt 3 items, against 2.25 for the 9 bamboo they came from.
Feed pandas
Pandas eat bamboo, and feeding it to a baby panda speeds up its growth. Pandas only breed when bamboo is growing no more than 5 blocks from the pair. Once it is, feed both pandas bamboo to start breeding.
