Set up TerraForged on your Minecraft server
Install TerraForged 0.2.16 on a Forge 1.16.5 server, then set level-type=terraforged in server.properties and start a fresh world with the new terrain.
TerraForged is a world generation mod. It replaces the vanilla terrain generator with new terrain, better rivers and custom biome features, and it adds its own world type that the server has to be told to use. This guide covers a Forge 1.16.5 server.
Checked against TerraForged 0.2.16 on Forge 1.16.5, October 2026.
What you need
- Forge on Minecraft 1.16.5. Version 0.2.16 is the newest stable file on CurseForge. The builds for 1.18.1 and 1.18.2 on that page are all marked alpha, so this guide sticks to 1.16.5.
- Java 8. JAR Manager shows "Runs on Java 8. We switch it for you." for 1.16.5, so you do nothing here.
- A world that has not been generated yet. The mod's page says to set the world type before the server starts, and the Config Editor describes the setting as the terrain generator used when the world is first created. An existing world therefore needs a fresh world folder, covered below.
- No other mod is listed as a requirement.
Switch the server to Forge 1.16.5
- Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
- Set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.16.5, then press Apply change.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked and press and hold Confirm & reinstall.
Your world is kept, but the screen warns that configuration files may be reset. The steps are the same as in Change your Minecraft version or mod loader.
Install the mod
- Open the Mods tab under Content.
- In the source chip row at the top of the tab, press CurseForge and search for TerraForged.
- Press Install on the TerraForged result. The server downloads the jar into
mods. Other projects with TerraForged in the name are add-ons or ports, so check the name matches.
Do not start the server yet.
Turn on the TerraForged world type
The World type list in the Config Editor has no TerraForged entry, so set this one by hand.
- Open File Manager, click
server.propertiesand press Edit. - Set the line
level-type=terraforged. Add it if the file has nolevel-typeline. - For a brand new world, leave
level-namealone. To keep your old world and start a new one, changelevel-nameto a new folder name such asterraforged-world. In the Config Editor this setting is called World folder, and its help text says the old folder stays on disk. - Press Save, go to Console, press Start and accept the EULA prompt if it appears.
When the log shows For help, type "help", the world has generated. Join the server to look at the terrain.
The Config Editor only writes the settings you change, so saving other options there later leaves your level-type line alone.
Players
The mod's page describes installing it in a game as installing Forge for the target Minecraft version and adding the TerraForged jar to the profile's mods folder. It does not say whether a player can join a server without the mod, so give your players the same two installs: Forge 1.16.5 and the TerraForged 0.2.16 jar. See Join a modded server from your launcher for the launcher steps.
Common problems
- The terrain looks like vanilla. The world was created before
level-type=terraforgedwas in place. Stop the server, changelevel-nameto a new folder name and start again. - The server will not start. Read the last lines of the console, or follow the crash report guide to find the line that names the mod.
- You are on 1.18 or newer. The 1.18 builds are alpha and the page has no file for anything later, so this mod is not a safe choice there.
