Set up a SteamPunk modpack server
Install the SteamPunk [LPS] Forge 1.20.1 modpack from the Modpacks tab using its CurseForge server pack, then start the server and fix common problems.
SteamPunk is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 from LunaPixelStudios. Its CurseForge page calls it a detailed steampunk-themed pack with more than 1000 quests, and version 19 is the Create: Post Production update. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files from CurseForge.
Checked against SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 (the CurseForge file dated 20 May 2026) and its server pack, on Forge 47.4.20 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.20. The server pack's
variables.txtnames that Forge build. The panel switches Java for you, which is Java 17 for this version. - Memory. The CurseForge page gives no figure. The same
variables.txtasks for a 4 GB heap (-Xmx4G), but the panel does not read that file. It sizes the heap from your plan's RAM at every start. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install. The server pack'smodsfolder holds 296 jar files, plus 36 more that it ships switched off as.jar.disabled. - Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 947 MB and unpacks to about 1 GB. Both sit on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so allow about 2 GB free. The download is deleted afterwards, and your world grows on top. The Disk Analyser tab shows what is using space.
- The same pack version for players. This guide installs v19 for Minecraft 1.20.1. Players should run that file from the CurseForge app.
Install the server files
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Press the CurseForge chip above the search box, then search for
SteamPunk. - Press Install on SteamPunk [LPS] by LunaPixelStudios. Other packs share the name, such as an older SteamPunk from 2020, so check the author.
- The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names a loader and a Minecraft version. Check that it reads Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1 before you confirm. The pack's page also lists older Forge files for Minecraft 1.19.2, and the version in the popup decides which of them gets installed. If it names 1.19.2, cancel. If the popup offers a Pack version list, pick the v19 file there; otherwise ask support. If it offers the list and the popup already reads 1.20.1, leave the list on Newest that fits your server.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, because your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.
The server pack ships mods and configs but no Forge jar. The install reads variables.txt from the pack and installs the Forge build it names.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
Settings the pack sets
The pack ships its own server.properties, and the install keeps it. Open the Config Editor to change these, then restart:
max-players=10is Player slots under Players. Raise it for a bigger group.motdis Server list message under World, and it starts as "A SteamPunk Server".view-distance=10is View distance (chunks) under Performance. Lower it if the server struggles.
The pack also turns on allow-flight and enable-command-block, shown as Allow flight and Command blocks under Gameplay, and sets enforce-whitelist=true with the whitelist itself off. The Players tab handles the whitelist.
Common problems
- The install stops while unpacking. The install message says your plan's disk may be too small for the pack. Free space in File Manager, or check plans.
- A player cannot join. Check they run SteamPunk v19 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, not an older file from the same page.
- The server lags. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
