Set up the Project Overpowered server

Install the Project Overpowered skyblock modpack on a Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server, with the world type, island commands and Java 8 notes.

Updated 4 min read

Project Overpowered is a skyblock modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. Its CurseForge page calls it beginner friendly, with more than 200 quests, around 150 mods and a custom endgame built on modular machinery. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's CurseForge server pack.

Checked against Project Overpowered RELEASE 5.0 (the CurseForge file dated 12 October 2025) on Forge 14.23.5.2859 and Minecraft 1.12.2, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2859. The server pack's variables.txt names both. Minecraft 1.12.2 runs on Java 8, which the panel picks for you. The wiki's FAQ recommends Java 8 and says Java 21 crashes the server straight away.
  • Memory. The official wiki's server guide says to have at least around 6 to 7 GB of RAM, depending on how many players are online at once. The server pack holds 115 mod jars. Your plan sets the RAM, so see how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 101 MB and unpacks to about 118 MB.
  • The same pack version for players. The official wiki's server guide says players must run the same pack version as the server. Anything extra a player adds to their own instance has to be added to the server or removed, except client-side mods.

Install the server

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Press the CurseForge chip above the search box, then search for Project Overpowered.
  3. Pick Project Overpowered - Skyblock. Project Overworld is a different pack.
  4. Press Install. The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Forge and Minecraft 1.12.2.
  5. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
  6. Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.

The server pack sits inside one folder named Poserverfiles5.0, which the install moves up to the main folder when it unpacks. It ships no Forge files, so the install reads variables.txt and sets up Forge 14.23.5.2859 itself.

Check the skyblock world settings

The official wiki's server guide says the world only generates as skyblock when server.properties contains level-type=voidworld, and that some hosts wipe that line when a pack installs. The server pack ships level-type=voidworld and level-name=voidworld, and the install keeps the file. Open server.properties in File Manager after the install and confirm the line is there.

Warning

World type in Config Editor offers only Normal, Superflat, Large biomes, Amplified and Single biome. It has no voidworld choice, so leave that setting alone and edit the line in File Manager if you ever need to.

Islands and commands

The official wiki lists these in-game commands: /island create makes a new island, /island invite <player> invites a player, /island join and /island leave join or leave an island, /sethome sets a home where you stand and /home teleports you to it. If players cannot reach each other's islands, the wiki's FAQ says to run the island commands from the server's Console tab or check that the player is an operator. The Players tab can make someone an operator.

The same guide says that if players are teleported back to their own island when they try to visit others, islandProtection must be false in config/voidislandcontrol.cfg. The server pack ships it as true. Restart the server after changing the file.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run RELEASE 5.0 on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
  • The world is not a skyblock. Check the level-type line above. It only applies to a world that has not been generated yet.
  • Lag spikes. The wiki's server guide suggests a view distance of around 8 to 12 chunks, which is View distance (chunks) in Config Editor. The server pack ships 10.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.

Your address is shown in the left rail, with a copy button beside it. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
