Set up the FTB Sky Odyssey server

Install FTB Sky Odyssey 1.5.2 on a Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server from the Feed The Beast source, including the spawn world move, RAM and fixes.

Updated 5 min read

FTB Sky Odyssey is a casual skyblock pack from the Feed The Beast team for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. Its page centres on Project EX, which generates large amounts of EMC, and on opening a portal to Dimension X. The Modpacks tab has a Feed The Beast source for this pack. This pack needs one extra file move before the first start, covered below.

Checked against FTB Sky Odyssey 1.5.2 (released in June 2025, the newest release) on Forge 14.23.5.2860 and Minecraft 1.12.2, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2860 and Java 8. These are the targets Feed The Beast lists for 1.5.2. The panel runs 1.12.2 on Java 8 and picks it for you.
  • Memory. The pack page asks for at least 4 GB of RAM and recommends 6 GB. Compare that with your plan using how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans.
  • The same pack version for players. They install FTB Sky Odyssey 1.5.2 in the FTB App, Feed The Beast's launcher. Join a modded server from your launcher has the steps.

Install from the Feed The Beast source

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Above the search box, press the Feed The Beast chip and search for Sky Odyssey. Searches need at least three letters. If there is no Feed The Beast chip, that source is not switched on for your account yet.
  3. Press Install on FTB Sky Odyssey.
  4. If the window has a version dropdown that reads Newest that fits your server, leave it there. That asks for 1.5.2, the newest release. Feed The Beast also lists 1.5.0 and 1.5.1 as betas, which the dropdown leaves out.
  5. Leave Take a backup first ticked and Keep my world, settings and player lists unticked. If every backup slot on your plan is full and protected, the install stops with "Couldn't start a backup. Free a backup slot, or untick the backup and try again." Do as it says.
  6. Leave Start the server when it's ready unticked. The world has to be moved first.
  7. Hold the install button, which reads Hold to Install and reinstall, until it fills.

When the install finishes, the console prints Pack installed. and you can move the world.

Move the spawn world before the first start

The pack's SERVER_OWNER_README.md says to move or copy the world folder up one folder, next to config and mods, so the spawn world generates correctly. Feed The Beast's installer leaves it in serverfiles, so do this once the install finishes and before you press Start:

  1. Open the File Manager and open the serverfiles folder.
  2. Click the world folder once to open its details, then choose Move to….
  3. Enter / as the Destination folder. Because the folder is called world, the panel asks you to confirm. Type world, then press Move.

The dialog also warns that a server stops finding a world moved out of /serverfiles. For this pack the top level is where the server looks, so go ahead. The folder holds level.dat and a region folder. Once it sits at the top level, the server finds it, because World folder in the Config Editor is world by default.

First start and your island

Press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA if the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding the address in Minecraft.

The README says that once you have joined, you create a team, either with the teams icon at the top left of the inventory screen or by typing /team create <team name> in game. A window then asks which world template you want. The pack's config/teamislands.cfg has select_islands=true, so players pick their island, and clear_inv_when_team_left=true, a setting named for clearing a player's inventory when they leave a team. Edit the file in File Manager with the server stopped, then start it again.

Common problems

  • The spawn area looks wrong. The world folder is probably still inside serverfiles. Stop the server and move it as above.
  • A player cannot join. Check they run FTB Sky Odyssey 1.5.2 on Minecraft 1.12.2.
  • A player lost their inventory. The clear_inv_when_team_left setting is named for exactly this, so check whether the player left a team. Restore from Backups if it was a mistake: Create and restore backups.
  • The server runs out of memory. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail, then read Why is my server lagging.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. Keep Take a backup first ticked if the current world matters to you.
