Set up NoPlugins on your Minecraft server

Install NoPlugins on Paper or Purpur to hide /plugins and /version from players, edit its config, test it and fix the common problems.

Updated 4 min read

NoPlugins hides commands from players. Out of the box it blocks the commands that list your plugins and server software, such as /plugins and /version, and replies with a message that looks like a normal "unknown command". This guide installs it on a Paper or Purpur server, shows the config and tests it.

Checked against NoPlugins 1.2.1 on Paper 26.1.2, October 2026. Its Modrinth page lists Minecraft 1.16 to 26.1.2 for that release, and its Hangar page lists up to 26.2.

Before you start

  • You need a Paper or Purpur server, which show a Plugins tab.
  • Several different plugins share the name NoPlugins on SpigotMC. This guide covers the one whose Modrinth description reads "A small plugin for hiding commands/plugins from players." It is also published on Hangar under SnowyaDev.
  • The Modrinth page gives the requirements as Java 17 and Minecraft 1.16 or newer. The panel picks Java for your Minecraft version.

Install NoPlugins

  1. Open the Backups tab and press Create backup.
  2. Select Plugins and type NoPlugins in the search box. Modrinth is the default source.
  3. Press Install on the row whose description reads "A small plugin for hiding commands/plugins from players.", not on "NoPlugins+", which is another plugin.
  4. Open the Console tab and press Restart.

The plugin writes plugins/NoPlugins/config.yml on start.

Test it

Operators have the noplugins.bypass permission by default, so test with a normal player account. Join and type /plugins. The player should see the deny message and no list. An operator still sees the real list. The plugin filters commands that players type. The Console tab is not a player.

The config

Stop the server and open plugins/NoPlugins/config.yml in the File Manager. The options are:

  • mode: BLACKLIST hides the commands you list. WHITELIST does the reverse: only the listed commands are allowed.
  • commands is the list of command names. The default list is plugins, pl, bukkit:plugins, about, version, ver, ?, icanhasbukkit and minecraft:*. A * is a wildcard.
  • regex-patterns takes regular expressions. The default is ^bukkit:.*.
  • deny-message is what the player sees. It uses MiniMessage formatting, supports PlaceholderAPI and can use \n for new lines. The default is <red>Unknown command. Type <yellow>/help</yellow> for a list of commands. Set it to "" to disable the message.
  • metrics-enabled: true sends bStats usage data. Set it to false to opt out.

Add other command names to commands, for example the name of a plugin's own command you want to hide. Save, then run noplugins reload in the Console tab or /noplugins reload in game. The /noplugins command needs noplugins.use and the reload needs noplugins.reload. Operators have both by default, so a player who is not an operator needs both nodes. The command is also available as /nopl.

Warning

In WHITELIST mode players can run only the commands you list. Switch back to BLACKLIST if players report that commands have stopped working.

Common problems

  • The plugin says it is disabled. The plugin disables itself on a config error and prints a line starting "Plugin disabled due to configuration errors". Read the Console tab for the "Config error" line, fix the mode or the regular expression, then press Restart in the Console tab. Once the plugin has disabled itself, /noplugins reload is not available. A bad edit followed by noplugins reload on a running plugin only prints a config error and keeps the previous settings. How to find and fix YAML and JSON config errors helps with indentation mistakes.
  • A hidden command still works. Only the names in commands and regex-patterns are hidden. Add the exact command name players use, with or without a plugin prefix, such as bukkit:plugins.
  • Operators still see hidden commands. That is the noplugins.bypass permission, which allows viewing and using all hidden commands.
