Set up the Liminal Industries modpack server
Install the Liminal Industries backrooms modpack on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, with server settings and voice chat notes.
Liminal Industries is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 by Appocryptha. Its CurseForge page puts you in the backrooms, where the way out is an automated factory built from a multi-chaptered tech tree, with trains, furniture to repurpose and sculk mobs to fight. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files from CurseForge.
Checked against Liminal Industries 1.19.3 (the CurseForge file dated 30 December 2025) and its server files (version 2, dated 14 July 2026), on Forge 47.4.13 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.13. The server files include that Forge build. The panel switches Java for you, which is Java 17 for this version.
- Memory. The CurseForge page gives no figure. The server files'
user_jvm_args.txtcarries only Forge's stock comment that 4 GB is a good default for a modded server, with the-Xmx4Gline left commented out, and the panel does not use that file because it sizes the heap from your plan's RAM at every start. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install. - Disk space. The server files are a download of about 418 MB and unpack to about 529 MB. Both sit on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so allow about 1 GB free. The download is deleted afterwards, and your world grows on top. The Disk Analyser tab shows what is using space.
- The same pack version for players. This guide installs 1.19.3. Players should run that version from the CurseForge app.
Install the server files
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Press the CurseForge chip above the search box, then search for
Liminal Industries. - Press Install on Liminal Industries by Appocryptha. Similar packs appear in the same results, such as Liminal Industries - Rescripted, Liminal Industries Acension and Liminal Industries - Oil Expansion. They are different projects, so check the name and the author.
- The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. If it offers a version dropdown, leave it on Newest that fits your server.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.
The server files sit inside one folder in the download, and the install moves them to the server's root. The files also carry the Forge libraries, so no loader is fetched afterwards.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. The pack's own eula.txt says eula=false. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
Settings the pack sets
The server files ship their own server.properties, and the install keeps it. Open the Config Editor to change these:
difficulty=hardis Difficulty under Gameplay.max-players=20is Player slots under Players.view-distance=10andsimulation-distance=10are View distance (chunks) and Simulation distance (chunks) under Performance. Lower them if the server struggles.allow-flight=trueis Allow flight under Gameplay.motdis Server list message under World, and it starts as "A Liminal Minecraft Server".
The 1.19.3 notes list a fix for a possible poolrooms generation bug on bigger servers.
Voice chat
The pack includes Simple Voice Chat 2.5.30. Its shipped config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties sets port=24454, and its comments say voice travels over UDP on that port, separate from the game, and that sharing the game's port is not recommended. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they run Liminal Industries 1.19.3 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, then compare their mod list with the server's
modsfolder. - The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small for the pack. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
- The server lags. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
