Set up the Fantasy Skies server

Install the Fantasy Skies skyblock modpack on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server and set the skyblock world type before the first start.

Updated 4 min read

Fantasy Skies is a skyblock modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge, by the CurseForge author knoxhack. You start trapped on a void island, and its page describes progression through dimensions by quests, with over 450 mods and 250+ quests. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's CurseForge server pack.

Checked against Fantasy Skies 1.5.0 (the CurseForge file dated 19 January 2024, which CurseForge marks as a beta) on Forge 47.2.20 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.2.20. The server pack's variables.txt names both. Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17, which the panel picks for you.
  • Memory. The pack's page gives no RAM figure, and the server pack holds 396 mod jars. Your plan sets the RAM, so see how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 702 MB and unpacks to about 774 MB, and the download sits on your disk while it unpacks.
  • The same pack version for players. Players install Fantasy Skies 1.5.0 from the CurseForge app.

Install the server

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Above the search box, press the CurseForge chip, then search for Fantasy Skies.
  3. Pick Fantasy Skies by knoxhack and press Install. The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1.
  4. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Leave Start the server when it's ready unticked for now, because of the world type step below, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
  5. Press and hold Hold to Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.

The pack ships no Forge files of its own, so the install reads variables.txt and sets up Forge 47.2.20 itself.

Set the world type before the first start

The pack's server.properties sets level-type=default, which is an ordinary overworld. The Skyblock Builder mod in the pack says that on a server you use skyblockbuilder:skyblock as the world type in server.properties. The World type list in Config Editor has no skyblock choice, so edit the file instead:

  1. Open File Manager and open server.properties.
  2. Change the line to level-type=skyblockbuilder:skyblock and save.

After that, leave World type alone in Config Editor. Its list has no skyblock choice, so picking one there and saving would replace this line.

The value only matters when a world is first created. If the server has already started once on the old value, take a backup, delete the world folder in File Manager and start again. The pack's server.properties sets level-name=world, and the server makes a new world in that folder when none is there.

First start

Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft, and joining a modded server from a launcher covers the client side.

The shipped server.properties also sets max-players=10 and allow-flight=true. In Config Editor those are Player slots and Allow flight.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run Fantasy Skies 1.5.0 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, then compare their mod list with the server's mods folder.
  • The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
  • The server lags. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
