Set up the Claws of Berk modpack server

Install Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) 3.2.7 on a Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge server from the CurseForge server pack in the Modpacks tab, with fixes.

Updated 5 min read

Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) is a How to Train Your Dragon pack by Kesselot for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. Its CurseForge page lists over 100 dragon species with more than 2k variants to tame, plus Viking ships, villages and dungeons. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's CurseForge server pack.

Checked against Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) 3.2.7 (the CurseForge files of 16 October 2026 UTC) on Forge 40.3.12 and Minecraft 1.18.2, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge 40.3.12. The server pack's variables.txt names both. The panel runs 1.18.2 on Java 17 and picks that for you.
  • Memory. Neither the Modrinth page nor the CurseForge page gives a RAM figure. The server pack holds 114 mod jars, so watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab after the first start. How much RAM a Minecraft server needs explains the sizing, and the Minecraft plans list each plan. The server pack's variables.txt sets -Xmx4G -Xms4G for its own start scripts, which the panel does not use.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 292 MB and unpacks to about 326 MB. The download sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so you need room for both.
  • The same version for players. Players need Claws of Berk 3.2.7 as well.

Install from CurseForge

The pack is listed on both Modrinth and CurseForge. Use CurseForge: a test install of another Forge pack from Modrinth on our panel on 23 October 2026 stopped with the error "forge provider not implemented", and nothing was installed.

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Above the search box, press the CurseForge chip and search for Claws of Berk. The filters belong to Modrinth, so they do not narrow this search.
  3. Press Install on the row titled Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) by Kesselot. Check the title and author, because the same search lists Claws and Skies (Isle of Berk), a different pack, and Kesselot also publishes Dawn of Berk, a separate pack on Minecraft 1.20.1 with its own guide. A window titled "Install Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk)?" opens.
  4. Leave Take a backup first ticked, which is the default. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. The backup needs a free backup slot, so delete an old backup first if your slots are full.
  5. If the window has Keep my world, settings and player lists, leave it unticked for the pack's own fresh world. If it has a version list, leave it on "Newest that fits your server".
  6. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want the server to boot by itself. If the window shows an I agree to the Minecraft EULA box once that is ticked, tick it too.
  7. Press and hold Install and reinstall for three seconds. The install log ends with Pack installed when it is done.

The CurseForge file the panel downloads is the dedicated server pack, so no mods are fetched one by one. The pack ships no Forge files of its own, so the install reads variables.txt and sets Forge up itself. The log shows Installing Forge 1.18.2-40.3.12 (pinned by the pack's variables.txt). The install also turns off the pack's client-only mods, which run on players' computers (6 of them in this pack); the Mods tab can turn them back on.

First start

If you did not tick the start box, press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA when the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type, such as Done (9.370s)! For help, type "help". Your address is in the left rail with a copy button, and Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Open Config Editor to set Player slots for the group you expect. Its help text calls View distance (chunks) the biggest lever on RAM and CPU, so lower it first if the server struggles.

Common problems

Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
