Set up a Better MC modpack server
Install Better MC BMC4 (Forge 1.20.1) or BMC5 (NeoForge 1.21.1) from the Modpacks tab using each edition's CurseForge server pack, then start the server.
Better MC is a "vanilla plus" modpack line from LunaPixelStudios. Its CurseForge pages list overhauled world generation, new structures and bosses, and quality-of-life mods. The line is numbered BMC1 to BMC6, and an edition can come in a Forge, Fabric or NeoForge version, each as its own CurseForge page. This guide covers two of them, BMC4 for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge and BMC5 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, and you install either from the Modpacks tab using the pack's own server files.
Checked against Better MC BMC4 v62 on Forge 47.4.20 and Minecraft 1.20.1, and BMC5 v53 on NeoForge 21.1.250 and Minecraft 1.21.1, October 2026.
Which edition to install
- Better MC [FORGE] BMC4. Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47.4.20. The page lists 350+ mods and 100+ quests. The server pack's
modsfolder holds 318 jar files, plus 58 more that it ships switched off as.jar.disabled. Java 17. - Better MC [NEOFORGE] BMC5. Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.250. The page lists 320+ mods. The server pack's
modsfolder holds 289 jar files, plus 61 more that it ships switched off as.jar.disabled. Java 21.
BMC1 to BMC3, and the Fabric editions, also have their own CurseForge pages, and this guide does not cover them. A newer one, Better MC [BMC6] for Minecraft 26.1.2 on NeoForge, has its own page too, and this guide does not cover that either. Pick the edition that matches the Minecraft version your players want, because the loader and the version are not interchangeable. The versions above are named in each server pack's variables.txt, and the panel switches Java for you.
What the pack needs
- Memory. Neither page gives a figure. Each server pack's
variables.txtasks for a 4 GB heap (-Xmx4G), but the panel does not read that file. It sizes the heap from your plan's RAM at every start. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install. - Disk space. The BMC4 server pack is a download of about 1 GB and unpacks to about 1.1 GB, so allow about 2.2 GB free. The BMC5 server pack is about 663 MB and unpacks to about 714 MB, so allow about 1.4 GB free. The download is deleted afterwards, and your world grows on top. The Disk Analyser tab shows what is using space.
- The same pack version for players. Players should run the same edition and version from the CurseForge app.
Install the server files
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Press the CurseForge chip above the search box, then search for
Better MC. - Press Install on Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 or Better MC [NEOFORGE] BMC5, both by LunaPixelStudios. Other packs share the name, so check the author and the edition in the title.
- The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names the loader and Minecraft version. If it offers a Pack version list, leave it on Newest that fits your server.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, because your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.
The server packs ship mods and configs but no loader jar. The install reads variables.txt from the pack and installs the loader build it names.
BMC4's newest client file, v62hf, has no server pack of its own, so the tab installs the v62 server pack. Tell your players to run v62.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
Settings
Neither server pack ships a server.properties, so the server starts with Minecraft's defaults. Open the Config Editor to set Player slots, Server list message and View distance (chunks), then restart. Minecraft server.properties explained covers every option.
Common problems
- The install stops while unpacking. The install message says your plan's disk may be too small for the pack. Free space in File Manager, or check plans.
- A player cannot join. Check they run the same edition, Minecraft version and loader as the server.
- The server lags. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
