Run a Rust Server With No Monuments

Make a Rust map without monuments using a world config file and a prefab blacklist, or a custom map, then wipe to regenerate it.

Updated 4 min read

Rust has no switch called "no monuments", but there are two ways to get a map without them: tell the map generator to skip the monument prefabs you name, or load a custom map that was built without any. Both come from Facepunch's own wiki. Checked against the Facepunch Rust wiki pages "Procedural Generation Customization" and "Hosting Custom Maps", October 2026.

Option 1: a world config file

Facepunch's wiki describes a launch parameter, world.configfile, that points at a JSON file of procedural generation settings. The file can switch off roads, rivers and powerlines, and it has a PrefabBlacklist list that blocks any prefab whose name contains the text you give, so you don't need the full path. Monuments are world prefabs. Their paths contain monument/, and the server log prints them, for example assets/bundled/prefabs/autospawn/monument/underwater_lab/underwater_lab_c.prefab. You list a piece of the name for each monument you want gone.

  1. On your computer, create a text file called noMonuments.json. This example uses the entry from the wiki's own Barren file that blocks caves. Add one entry per monument you want to remove:
{
  "PrefabBlacklist": [ "monument/cave/cave_" ]
}
  1. Open the File Manager and Upload it into server/rust, the folder that holds your save files and cfg. The wiki says to place the file in the server identity folder, and ours is rust.
  2. Open the Startup tab, find Additional Arguments and enter:
+world.configfile "noMonuments.json"
  1. Save it. The setting only applies when a map is generated, so continue to the next section.

The wiki says to use a blacklist or a whitelist, never both, and that a whitelist blocks everything not on it. If the Console reports a problem, take the entry out and start again.

Tip

The wiki's own Barren example turns off main roads, trails, rivers, powerlines and above-ground rails and blacklists caves, icebergs, ice lakes, swamps, cliffs, rock formations and bushes. It notes Facepunch retired the Barren map in December 2023, so that file is the way to get something close to it.

Make the server use it

The wiki says this file changes how a map is generated, and that it doesn't affect a map already present. Delete the old .map file and regenerate. On our panel, a map wipe does that.

  1. Take a backup from the Backups tab.
  2. Optionally set a new World Seed on the Startup tab for a different layout.
  3. Open the Wipes tab and look at the Wipe now card. Set What gets wiped to Map only. Its Seed control starts on New random seed, which overwrites the World Seed you set. Choose Keep this seed if you want your own seed, or leave it on New random seed and skip step 2. Then type WIPE and press Wipe the server. How to set your Rust wipe schedule, map and blueprint wipes shows the whole tab.
  4. Watch the Console until Server startup complete. A fresh map takes a few minutes to build.

If you leave Custom Map URL filled in, the server loads that map and ignores the seed and size, so clear it for this option.

Option 2: a custom map with no monuments

Facepunch's wiki lists two map editors: RustEdit and Rust Map Editor. Both can edit prefabs, and the wiki's modding pages list radtowns, caves and the oil rig as world prefabs. Build a map without them, host the .map file at a direct download link, and follow How to add a custom map to your Rust server.

Common problems

  1. Monuments are still there - the map was generated before the config file existed. Run the map wipe again, and check the filename in Additional Arguments matches the uploaded file exactly.
  2. The server won't start - remove the text from Additional Arguments and restart. Then check the JSON for a missing comma or bracket.
  3. Players are kicked for an InsideTerrain violation - the wiki says this follows from setting PercentageTier0 to little or nothing, which leaves the map without spawn points. Leave that setting alone.
