Install Valheim Plus on your server

Valheim Plus is a long-running mod that bundles a long list of tweaks into one config file: carry weight, stack sizes, building rules, workbench range, difficulty scaling and more. The original project stopped updating years ago, and the copy most old guides point to doesn't work with current Valheim. The version to install now is a maintained fork, and your Mods tab can install it.

Which Valheim Plus to install

The original ValheimPlus-ValheimPlus package on Thunderstore stopped at version 9.9.11 in December 2022 and is marked deprecated. Its GitHub repository's last release is from the same month. The fork's install notes warn that a host installing the original is "installing the wrong version, which is broken with the current Valheim game".

The fork is ValheimPlus Grantapher Temporary, by Grantapher. It targets Valheim 1.0.20, needs only BepInExPack Valheim, and its notes say it is the "temporary home of the mod while the mod owners are unable to update the official repo". Its Thunderstore name keeps "Temporary" in it, but the mod is the same Valheim Plus with a new maintainer.

Before you start

• Take a backup from the Backups tab.
• Install BepInEx from the Mods tab first. Install BepInEx and mods on your Valheim server covers it, and the same step turns Crossplay off, which modded servers need.
• Plan for your players to install it too. Valheim Plus checks versions when someone joins.

Install it from the Mods tab

1. Open the Mods tab and stay in the Store view.
2. Search for ValheimPlus. The card from Grantapher comes first. The old build is hidden unless you change the Deprecated filter to With deprecated, so leave that alone.
3. Click Install. It needs nothing else, so there is no list of extra mods to confirm.
4. Restart the server. In the Console, look for a Loading [Valheim Plus 10.4.0.0] line and for Chainloader startup complete with no failures.
5. Open the File Manager, then BepInEx/config. On this first start Valheim Plus writes its settings to org.bepinex.plugins.valheim_plus.cfg. The mod's notes say it creates the file the first time the server starts, so there is nothing to upload.

If an older Valheim Plus is already listed in Installed, for example one you uploaded by hand, delete it first, so the version you installed is the only one on the server.

Nothing changes until you edit the config

Every Valheim Plus gameplay section ships switched off (only the Server section ships on), and the notes say "by default all settings are turned off". Install the mod, join, and you'll see no difference. Change Valheim Plus settings on your server shows how to turn sections on.

Get your players on the same version

The mod's Server section keeps enforceMod on by default. With that, only players with the same Valheim Plus version can join, and you can only join servers running the same version. It also keeps serverSyncsConfig on, so players receive your server's settings when they connect.

1. In Installed, click Export for players, then Create code.
2. Players paste the code into r2modman or the Thunderstore app with Import profile, From code.
3. After any update, make a new code the same day.

Common problems

1. A player is refused with a version message. Their Valheim Plus doesn't match the server's. Send a fresh code.
2. The mod loaded but the game plays as normal. The sections you want are still switched off. See the settings guide linked above.
3. The console says Failed to apply patches. That follows a Valheim update the mod hasn't caught up with. Our servers update Valheim on restart, so use Check for updates in Installed and wait for the fork's next release if there isn't one yet. Update mods on your Valheim server has the steps.
