Change Valheim Plus settings on your server

Edit the Valheim Plus config file: enable a section, then change carry weight, teleport rules, enemy scaling, workbench range and building limits.

Updated 4 min read

Everything Valheim Plus does is switched on and tuned in one settings file on your server. Carry weight, enemy scaling, teleport rules, workbench range and building limits all live there, in sections you enable one at a time. Because the server sends its settings to joining players, you only edit the file once.

Tip

Checked against ValheimPlus 10.4.0.0 (the Grantapher fork) on Valheim 1.0.20, October 2026. Install it first with Install Valheim Plus on your server.

Open the settings file

  1. Start the server once after installing Valheim Plus, so it creates its settings. The mod's notes say the file appears the first time the server starts.
  2. Click Stop in the dashboard. Most settings only take effect when the game starts, so edit while it is off.
  3. Open the File Manager, go into BepInEx/config and find org.bepinex.plugins.valheim_plus.cfg. It is a .cfg file, not a YAML one.
  4. Double-click it, or select it and click Edit.

The file is plain text with sections in square brackets, such as [Items], and key = value lines under them. BepInEx describes its config files as using "TOML-like syntax", and each setting has a comment above it explaining what it does.

Turn a section on, then change a value

Each section has an enabled key. The notes say all settings ship turned off, so a change under a section is ignored until you set that section's enabled to true. The [Server] section is the exception: it is on by default.

  1. Find the section you want, for example [Items].
  2. Change enabled = false to enabled = true.
  3. Change the keys underneath. Leave the ones you don't want at their defaults.
  4. Click Save, then Start the server and watch the Console for errors.

Examples that answer the common requests

These keys and defaults come from the mod's own source for 10.4.0.0.

SectionKeyDefaultWhat it does
[Items]noTeleportPreventionfalseLets you teleport with ores and other items that normally block portals
[Items]itemStackMultiplier0Percent change to every stack size: 50 turns a 100 stack into 150
[Items]baseItemWeightReduction0Percent change to item weight: -50 halves it
[Player]baseMaximumWeight300Base carry weight
[Player]deathPenaltyMultiplier0Percent change to the death penalty: -50 reduces it by half
[Game]gameDifficultyHealthScale30Percent more monster health per player nearby
[Game]gameDifficultyDamageScale4Percent more monster damage per player nearby
[Game]difficultyScaleRange100Metres within which other players count for that scaling
[Workbench]workbenchRange20Workbench radius in metres
[Workbench]disableRoofCheckfalseDrops the roof and exposure requirement to use a workbench
[Building]noInvalidPlacementRestrictionfalseRemoves some "invalid placement" messages, such as placing pieces into other objects
[Building]noWeatherDamagefalseRemoves rain and water damage to buildings

For example, to let everyone teleport with metals, enable [Items] and set noTeleportPrevention = true. To make monsters tougher for each extra player nearby, raise gameDifficultyHealthScale under [Game].

Every other setting is in the file with a comment, and the full feature list is in the mod's README on its Thunderstore page. The mod's notes say its advanced building system still can't build in dungeons or other no-build areas, so don't expect a setting to open them up.

What your players see

With serverSyncsConfig on in [Server], which is its default, players joining get the server's values and their own file is left alone. The notes say keybinds, HUD options and field of view always stay the player's own. The same [Server] section holds enforceMod, which requires everyone to run the same Valheim Plus version, so leave both at their defaults.

Common problems

  1. A change has no effect. The section's enabled is still false, or the server was running when you saved. Fix enabled, then stop and start the server.
  2. The file isn't there. Valheim Plus hasn't started yet. Check Installed in the Mods tab, restart, and look at the Console for load errors.
  3. A player says their game plays differently. Check they have the same Valheim Plus version, and send a fresh code from Export for players.
  4. You want everything back to normal. Stop the server, delete the .cfg file, then start again. Valheim Plus writes a fresh one when the file is missing.
