Set up the Treasure2 mod on Minecraft

Install Treasure2 4.1.0 and GottschCore on a Forge 1.20.1 server, spawn test chests with /t2 chest, and tune mimics and loot in the server config.

Updated 4 min read

Treasure2 scatters locked chests of loot through the world, along with the keys, locks and wishing wells that go with them. This guide sets up the Forge 1.20.1 build and the library mod it cannot run without.

Checked against Treasure2 4.1.0 and GottschCore 2.8.0 on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026. Those are the newest builds on Modrinth, which is what the Mods tab installs. The command, the config options and the library range below were also re-read in the 4.2.1 source and the GottschCore 2.9.0 jar, the newest on CurseForge.

What you need

  • Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1. The mod file asks for Forge 47 or newer and a Minecraft version from 1.20.1 up to, but not including, 1.21. The panel picks Java 17 for you.
  • GottschCore 2.5.1 or newer, below 3.0.0. This is the author's library mod. 2.8.0 is the newest Forge 1.20.1 build on Modrinth.
  • Both mods on every player's computer. Modrinth marks Treasure2 as required on the client and the server, and the mod file asks for GottschCore on both sides.

NeoForge 1.21.1 has a separate Treasure2 jar (5.0.4 on Modrinth) that this guide does not cover. CurseForge lists newer Forge builds, Treasure2 4.2.1 and GottschCore 2.9.0. The command and the settings below are the same in the project's source for 4.2.1 as in 4.1.0, and GottschCore 2.9.0 still fits the range the mod file asks for.

Switch the server to Forge 1.20.1

  1. Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
  2. Set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.20.1, then press Apply change.
  3. Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.

Your world is kept, but configuration files may be reset. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the detail.

Install both mods

  1. Open the Mods tab under Content, with the Modrinth source chip selected.
  2. Search for GottschCore and press Install. Do this first. The tab only offers what a listing names as required, and Modrinth's entry for Treasure2 4.1.0 names nothing.
  3. Search for Treasure2 and press Install on the one by gottsch. Treasure2 Block Mining Fix and Diamethyst's Treasure2 Loot are separate add-ons.
  4. Go to Console, press Start, and accept the EULA prompt the first time.

Spawn a chest to test it

Operators can place a chest with the mod's command. Give yourself operator rights from the Players tab (whitelist and operator guide), then type this in chat while in the game:

/t2 chest ~2 ~ ~ treasure2:wood_chest common SOUTH locked

After the position come the chest block, the rarity, the direction and then any of locked, sealed and mimic, in any order. Rarity names run common, uncommon, scarce, rare, epic, legendary and mythical. Type the chest name from the suggestions the game offers as you type, since the command suggests the mod's own chest names.

To open a locked chest, hold Shift while using the matching key on it.

Settings

Treasure2 keeps its server options in treasure2-server.toml, inside serverconfig in your world folder (world by default). Once the server has started, open it in the File Manager with Edit, change a value, press Save and restart. These are the useful ones:

  • enableMimics under [mobs] is true by default, and probability is how often a mimic stands in for a chest. The default is 12.
  • enableVanillaLootModifiers under [wealth] controls whether Treasure2 loot is injected into vanilla loot tables.
  • enableKeyBreaks under [keysAndLocks] controls whether a key can break when it is used on a lock.
  • enableMaps under [maps] lets a chest hold a map to another chest.
Tip

The mod's page says it fills chests from loot tables set by datapacks, with a Twilight Forest datapack as the example to copy. Datapack zips go in the datapacks folder of your world.

Common problems

  • The server stops at start and names gottschcore. The library is missing or older than 2.5.1. Install it from the Mods tab. A mod that fails shows a Failed to load or Needs badge in the Installed view.
  • A player cannot join. They need Forge 1.20.1, Treasure2 and GottschCore. See Join a modded server from your launcher.
  • /t2 says unknown command. You are not an operator, or the mod did not load. Check the console log for the mod name.
