Set up Tinkers' Tool Leveling on Minecraft

Install Tinkers Tool Leveling 2 on a Forge 1.20.1 server, add Tinkers' Construct and Mantle and tune levelling in the config.

Updated 3 min read

Tinkers' Tool Leveling gives Tinkers' Construct tools experience, and every level up adds a modifier. It is an addon, so Tinkers' Construct has to be on the server and on every player's game, and so does this mod.

Checked against Tinkers Tool Leveling 2 1.3.0 on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026.

Warning

The mod's own page says using it means you forfeit all resemblance with balance, because Tinkers' Construct is built around a limited number of modifiers.

Pick the version

The original mod by boni stops at Minecraft 1.12.2. Its last file, 1.1.0, is from October 2018, and the CurseForge page says there are no plans to update it past 1.12.2. This guide covers the remake for newer Minecraft, Tinkers Tool Leveling 2 by RedFox86. Its 1.3.0 build, released on Modrinth on 20 October 2026, is for Forge 1.20.1. It does not run on Paper, Purpur or Fabric.

The remake needs Tinkers' Construct 3.11.2.166 or newer, and Tinkers' Construct in turn needs Mantle. Set up Tinkers' Construct covers the base mod.

Install it

  1. Open JAR Manager under More. Choose Forge under Server software and 1.20.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel picks Java 17 for 1.20.1. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup first in the Backups tab.
  2. Open Mods under Content. Keep the Modrinth chip selected in the source chip row at the top of the tab, search for Tinkers Tool Leveling 2 and press Install.
  3. If a window lists add-ons the mod needs, choose Install all. Afterwards open the Installed view and check that Tinkers' Construct and Mantle are both listed, adding any that is missing.
  4. Restart from the Console tab.

Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full version steps. Every player installs the same mod files too, and Join a modded server from your launcher covers that side.

How levelling works

The remake gives a random modifier on each level up and a bonus modifier on every third level.

Settings

The remake writes tleveling/common.toml in the config folder. Stop the server and edit it in the File Manager. It includes levelupExpRequired (200 by default) and modifierLevelGap (3 by default, and 0 turns bonus modifiers off). Its other files for modifiers and custom XP are written to a folder in config whose name starts with tleveling.

Operator commands

The commands are run in the game while holding a Tinkers' tool. The remake has /tleveling levelup, /tleveling level get, /tleveling level set <value>, /tleveling exp get and /tleveling exp set <value>, all for operator level 2.

Common problems

  • The server stops at startup: read the last lines of the Console. The remake needs Tinkers' Construct and Mantle, so check the Installed view lists both. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the log.
  • A player is refused with a mod list error: their mod files differ from the server's. Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains it for newer Forge versions.
  • Tools never level: the remake lists support for most Tinkers' tools and armour, so check the tool is a Tinkers' Construct one.
