Install Quilt on your Minecraft server
Switch a server to Quilt in JAR Manager, learn what Quilt still supports in 2026, and add mods from the Mods tab.
Quilt is a mod loader started in 2021, building on the modding technology of the Fabric project. It loads Quilt mods and, in most cases, Fabric mods too. On our panel you install it from JAR Manager, which downloads Quilt's own installer and sets the server up with it.
Checked against Quilt Installer 0.15.1 and Quilt's list of stable Minecraft versions, which tops out at 26.3, October 2026.
What to know about Quilt first
Quilt's own FAQ says Fabric mods work on Quilt "in most cases", and that it keeps a list of the few that do not. It also says Quilt Loader has been in beta since April 2022, and that the Quilt Standard Libraries were discontinued in December 2025. Older releases of them stay available on Modrinth and CurseForge. The newest Quilted Fabric API files on Modrinth are for Minecraft 1.21 and earlier, and the Fabric API project there lists only the Fabric loader. Quilt's docs do not say whether the Fabric API mod runs on Quilt for current Minecraft versions. In our test on Minecraft 26.3 with Quilt Loader 0.30.1, Fabric API 0.164.0 and Chunky, a small Fabric mod that lists Fabric API as required, loaded and the server started with no load error. We tried only that one mod, so a larger Fabric mod may still not work. If your mods need Fabric API and you want the one loader that project lists, run them on Fabric. Forge, Fabric or Quilt: which loader compares them.
Before you start
- Quilt may not be switched on for your account yet. If Quilt is not in the Server software list, it is not available to you at the moment. The panel hides it until our updated Minecraft installer is enabled. Contact support to ask.
- Back up. Switching software reinstalls the server. Your world is kept, but configuration files may be reset. Create and restore backups has the steps.
- Mods already installed. The switch window checks your mods against the new version and says how many have no build for it.
Switch to Quilt
- Open your server and choose JAR Manager under More in the left rail.
- In Server software, choose Quilt. The note under the list says it is a Fabric fork that runs Quilt and most Fabric mods.
- Choose a Minecraft version. The list holds stable releases only. The panel shows which Java the version runs on and switches it for you.
- Press Apply change.
- In the window titled "Reinstall server?", leave Take a backup first ticked. If some mods have no build for the new setup, you can also tick Disable the followed by a count that won't run (kept, not deleted). Hold Hold to Confirm & reinstall until it completes. If some mods have no build and you left the disable box unticked, the button reads Hold to Switch anyway instead.
- The panel says "Change applied - reinstall started. Watch the console for progress."
Open the Console. The installer prints "Installing server launcher for" followed by the version, then "Installing libraries" and "Downloading server". A line starting curl: (22) that ends in a 403 error can show above them; in our test the install carried on and finished anyway. It runs Quilt's installer in server mode with the option to download the server jar, which is the command Quilt documents. The finished server starts from quilt-server-launch.jar. Press Start when the install ends and accept the Minecraft EULA if asked.
Add mods
Once Quilt is running, the add-on tab is named Mods. Its store searches for Quilt and Fabric builds, so you will see both. Install as usual, and read the window that opens if a mod needs others. Install mods from Modrinth on your server has the details. Mods that were already in the mods folder stay there after the switch.
Going back
The Restore previous jar button does not work when Quilt was on either side of the switch, because the server's start script launches a different file. To go back, pick the old software and version in JAR Manager and press Apply change again.
If the server will not start
Read the Console first. The Installed list does not badge every load error, so check that your mods match the Minecraft version and loader you chose. Find and read a Minecraft server crash report shows where the files are, and Fix Minecraft mod and plugin load errors explains the common messages.
