Install Quark on your server
Install Quark 4.1-487 and Zeta on a NeoForge 1.21.1 server, learn what players need, and find the config file name and Zeta range.
Quark, by Vazkii and the Violet Moon team, is a large mod made of many small vanilla-style features. Every feature is a module that can be switched off on its own. Modrinth lists over a hundred of them, from vertical slabs, variant chests and ladders to the Pickarang, the Trowel and the Glimmering Weald biome. This guide installs it on a NeoForge 1.21.1 server and notes the Forge 1.20.1 build.
Checked against Quark 4.1-487 with Zeta 1.1-40 on NeoForge 1.21.1, October 2026.
Pick the right build
Modrinth and CurseForge list these newest files:
- NeoForge, Minecraft 1.21.1: Quark 4.1-487, published on 5 October 2026. Its jar asks for NeoForge 21.1.252 or newer.
- Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1: Quark 4.0-462, published on 16 April 2025.
- Older versions: builds for 1.19.2, 1.18.2 and earlier exist. Those need AutoRegLib instead of Zeta, so check the project page before you use one.
To change loader or version, open JAR Manager under More, choose NeoForge under Server software and 1.21.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The switch reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content and keep the Modrinth chip selected in the source chip row at the top of the tab. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
- Search for
Quarkand press Install on Quark. Results such as Quark Oddities, Ascended Quark and Dynamic Trees - Quark are separate projects, and the quarkmod.net page says Oddities must be installed separately. - A prompt titled "Needs 1 more add-on" names Zeta, which Modrinth lists as required for Quark from 1.20.1 onwards. Press Install all.
- Restart from the Console tab. The install toast says "Restart the server to load them".
The 4.1-487 jar carries Biolith 3.0.14 inside it, so you do not install Biolith yourself. Open the Installed view to check. Quark and Zeta should both be listed with no Failed to load badge.
Players need it too
Modrinth lists Quark as required on both the client and the server, so each player installs the same Quark and Zeta for their loader and Minecraft version. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains a refusal when versions differ.
Settings
Quark's own page says every feature can be disabled and tweaked individually. The settings file is quark-common.toml in the config folder after the first start. Stop the server before you edit it in the File Manager, then start it again.
Quark builds for Minecraft 1.16 added a "Realistic" world type. The quarkmod.net page lists it only for the range from 1.16 up to but not including 1.18, so there is no Quark world type to set in server.properties on 1.21.1.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: Zeta is missing or the wrong version. The 4.1-487 jar asks for Zeta 1.0 up to, but not including, 1.2, and NeoForge 21.1.252 or newer.
- A player cannot join: a different Quark or Zeta version on their side can cause this. Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains the message.
- Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
