Install Quality Tools on your server
Install Quality Tools 1.0.7 with Potion Core on a Forge 1.12.2 server, then use the reforging station and tune its config files.
Quality Tools, by Tmtravlr, gives tools, armour and weapons a random quality when they enter your inventory, inspired by Terraria. A reforging station lets you roll a new quality. The newest build is for Forge on Minecraft 1.12.2 (older builds exist for 1.10.2 and 1.11.2), and it needs the Potion Core mod. This guide sets up the server and installs both.
Checked against Quality Tools 1.0.7 with Potion Core 1.9 on Forge 1.12.2, October 2026.
What it does
According to the CurseForge page, tools, armour and weapons get a random quality that affects things like attack damage, dig speed and armour protection. All the qualities, and the items that can receive them, are configurable.
- Reforging station: put the tool in the top slot and the material you would use to repair it in the bottom slot, then click the button. Items that cannot normally be repaired, such as shears, use custom reforging materials from a config file.
- Other mods: the page says it should pick up tools and their repair items from other mods automatically.
- Baubles: the optional Baubles mod lets accessories carry qualities. Quality Tools adds an emerald ring and an emerald amulet for this, which you reforge with emeralds.
What the server needs
This build declares that it accepts Minecraft 1.12.2 and nothing else, and it requires Potion Core to load first. CurseForge lists no Fabric, NeoForge or Paper build, and the last file was published in 2019.
To put the server on Forge 1.12.2, open JAR Manager under More, choose Forge under Server software and 1.12.2 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel runs 1.12.2 on Java 8 and switches that for you. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
Install it
The mod's own page is on CurseForge, so use that source.
- Open Mods under Content and press the CurseForge chip.
- Search for
Quality Tools. Check the Game version filter reads 1.12.2, then press Install on Quality Tools. A result called Quality Tools JEI compat is a separate add-on. - A prompt titled "Needs 1 more add-on" names Potion Core, which CurseForge lists as required. It offers no other add-ons. Press Install all.
- Restart from the Console tab. The install toast says "Restart the server to load them".
Open the Installed view to check. Quality Tools and Potion Core should both be listed with no Failed to load badge.
Players need it too
The mod adds a reforging station block and items, so each player needs a Forge 1.12.2 profile with Quality Tools and Potion Core in their own mods folder. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains a refusal when the mods differ.
Settings
After the first start the mod writes config/qualitytools/general.cfg. Its general section has three switches:
use repair itemallows a tool's repair item to be used for reforging, such as an iron ingot for an iron sword.allow stackable itemsallows qualities on stackable items, which the mod warns could behave oddly.ignore unknown itemslets the config files load even if they name items that are not installed.
The mod also writes a JSON file for each kind of item (tools.json, helmets.json, bows.json and so on) and a reforging materials.json, which hold the qualities and the custom reforging materials. reforging materials.json sits beside general.cfg in config/qualitytools. The item files are in a subfolder of it, config/qualitytools/Quailities, and the mod spells that name that way. Edit the file in the File Manager, then run qualitytoolsreload in the Console to apply it without a restart, or restart the server. If a file has errors, the Console prints the problem and answers "Encountered problems while reloading tools configs". Running it from the Console did not write a problems.txt.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: Potion Core is missing. Install Potion Core for 1.12.2 and restart.
- No results for the mod: make sure CurseForge is the selected chip and the Game version is 1.12.2.
- Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
