Set up the Portal Gun mod on Minecraft
Install iChun's Portal Gun 7.1.0 and iChunUtil on a Forge 1.12.2 server, craft the gun and tune portal range and glass rules in the config.
iChun's Portal Gun mod recreates the Portal gun from Valve's games. One mouse button fires a blue portal and the other an orange one, and you walk through either to reach the other. This guide sets up the Forge 1.12.2 build and its library, iChunUtil, on your server.
Checked against Portal Gun 7.1.0 and iChunUtil 7.2.2 on Forge 1.12.2, October 2026.
What you need
- Forge on Minecraft 1.12.2. The mod file accepts Minecraft 1.12 releases only. 7.1.0 is the newest 1.12.2 file on CurseForge, uploaded in March 2019. The panel picks Java 8 for 1.12.2.
- iChunUtil 7.2.x. Portal Gun 7.1.0 asks for iChunUtil from 7.2.0 up to, but not including, 8.0.0. CurseForge lists it as a required dependency, and its newest 1.12.2 file is 7.2.2.
- The same jars on every player's computer. The mod file lists 7.1.0 up to 7.2.0 as the Portal Gun releases it accepts from the other side, and 7.2.0 up to 7.3.0 for iChunUtil, so give players the same releases.
Several unrelated mods are also called Portal Gun. Pick the one by iChun. The 1.12.2 files are on CurseForge.
Switch the server to Forge 1.12.2
- Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
- Set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.12.2, then press Apply change.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.
Your world is kept, but configuration files may be reset. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the detail.
Install it
- Open the Mods tab under Content and select the CurseForge source chip.
- Search for Portal Gun and press Install on the one by iChun.
- A window titled "Needs 1 more add-on" should name iChunUtil. Press Install all (2).
- Go to Console, press Start, and accept the EULA prompt the first time.
If the tab says the author only allows downloads through CurseForge's own app, download both files from their CurseForge pages and upload them into the mods folder with Upload files in the File Manager.
Crafting and controls
The mod adds the Portal Gun, Ender Pearl Dust and the Miniature Black Hole. Smelt an Ender Pearl in a furnace to get one Ender Pearl Dust. The mod file holds the two crafting recipes:
- Miniature Black Hole: a Nether Star in the middle, ringed by eight Ender Pearl Dust.
- Portal Gun: obsidian, iron ingot, iron ingot across the top. Then diamond, Miniature Black Hole, iron ingot. Then iron ingot, obsidian, iron ingot.
The project page says the Attack button fires a blue portal and the Use Item button fires an orange one. The mod also has keys for grabbing blocks and entities, resetting your portals and zooming. Each player sets those on their own computer.
Settings
After the first start the mod writes config/portalgun.cfg. Open it in the File Manager with Edit, change a value, press Save and restart. The options the mod defines for play are:
- Maximum Portal Firing Distance (
maxShootDistance). - Portals Can Go Through Glass (
canFireThroughGlass) and Portals Can Go Through Liquid (canFireThroughLiquid). - Portals Can Be Resized When Created (
canPortalsResizeWhenCreated). - Portal Projectiles Can Chunk Load (
canPortalProjectilesChunkload). The mod's own note warns that turning this off might cause issues. - Entity Grab Weight Base (
entityGrabWeightBase). Set it to 0 and the gun stops grabbing blocks and entities that are not part of this mod.
Back up before you change these on a server that already has portals in use. See Create and restore backups.
Common problems
- The server stops at start and names ichunutil. The library is missing or outside 7.2.x. Install it from the Mods tab, or upload it by hand.
- A player cannot join and the message mentions mod versions. Their Portal Gun or iChunUtil is probably outside the ranges above. See Join a modded server from your launcher.
- The Mods tab finds nothing. Check that the CurseForge source chip is selected and that the Game version filter reads 1.12.2.
