Install the Mystcraft mod on your server
Install Mystcraft 0.13.7.06 on a Forge 1.12.2 server, find its commands and settings files, and see what players need.
Mystcraft brings the Myst books to Minecraft. Players write their own dimensions, called Ages, in special books and use linking books to travel between them. It is an older mod, and its newest build is for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. Players need the same mod in their own game.
Checked against Mystcraft 0.13.7.06 on Forge 1.12.2, October 2026.
What it needs
The newest Mystcraft build, 0.13.7.06, is for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. Modrinth and CurseForge list no builds for any later Minecraft version, and no Fabric or NeoForge builds. As a mod it can't run on Paper or Purpur. Minecraft 1.12.2 runs on Java 8, and the panel picks that for you. The mod lists no other required mods.
Open Content in the panel menu and look for Mods. If the tab says Plugins or is missing, open JAR Manager under More, choose Forge under Server software, pick 1.12.2 as the Minecraft version and press Apply change. Leave Take a backup first ticked and confirm with Confirm & reinstall. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps. Switching keeps your world but can reset configuration files, so make a backup in the Backups tab first.
Install Mystcraft
- Open Mods, keep the Store view and the Modrinth chip selected in the source chip row at the top of the tab. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
- Search for
Mystcraftand press Install on the result named exactly Mystcraft, by xcompwiz. Mystcraft: Ages, Mystcraft: Ageless and VerseWorks are separate mods inspired by it. - Restart from the Console tab. The install message says "Restart the server to load it".
Open the Installed view to check. Mystcraft should be listed with no Failed to load badge.
Players need the same mod
Modrinth marks Mystcraft as required on both the client and the server. Each player installs Mystcraft 0.13.7.06 through their launcher on Forge 1.12.2. Join a modded server from your launcher covers it, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains the usual refusal when lists differ.
Writing and visiting Ages
The mod's page describes the basics. A Descriptive Book is crafted from a book and a feather in no set shape, and it links to a new Age. A Linking Book is crafted from a book and remembers where its maker was. Using a book from the hand is a one-way trip, so a player needs a Linking Book made before leaving, or they cannot return. A book stand or lectern holds the book without dropping it on the ground.
Permissions and settings
Mystcraft ships server commands with these usage lines:
/myst-permissions <player> <restrict|permit> <entry|depart> <all|dimid>takes a player,restrictorpermit,entryordepart, andallor a dimension ID./myst-agebook [dim]creates an age book and must be run by a player./myst-regenchunk [range] [dimId] [chunkX] [chunkZ]regenerates chunks.
Run /myst-permissions from Console. With no arguments it prints the usage line above.
The jar's code names several settings files, among them mystcraft/core.cfg, mystcraft/balance.cfg, mystcraft/symbols.cfg and mystcraft/instabilities.cfg. They sit under the config folder in File Manager after the first start. Stop the server before you edit.
Common problems
- Nothing turns up in the results: Mystcraft has no build for your Minecraft version. Move the server to Forge 1.12.2 with the steps above.
- The server stops at startup: open Console and read the last lines, then look in the Installed view for a Needs badge. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the log.
- Players can't join: check they are on Forge 1.12.2 with the same Mystcraft version. Fix the missing mods exception when joining covers the usual causes.
