Install the Lucky Block mod on your server

Install Lucky Block 13.0 on a NeoForge 1.21.8 server with Kotlin for Forge, then set right-click drops, luck crafting and add-ons.

Updated 4 min read

The Lucky Block mod adds a block that does something random when you break it, such as dropping items, spawning mobs, placing structures or giving a potion effect. It also adds a Lucky Sword, a Lucky Bow and a Lucky Potion. It runs on Forge, Fabric and NeoForge, and every player needs it on their own game too.

Checked against Lucky Block 13.0 on NeoForge 1.21.8, October 2026.

What you need

  • NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.8. This is the newest Lucky Block file on CurseForge, dated December 2025. Its source asks for Java 21 and Minecraft 1.21.6 or newer in the 1.21 line. Pick 1.21.8 in JAR Manager and the panel runs the server on Java 21 for you.
  • Kotlin for Forge 5. The NeoForge build loads through Kotlin for Forge, and CurseForge lists it as a required dependency. The source accepts any 5.x version.
  • Another loader? CurseForge's newest Fabric file is 13.1 for Minecraft 1.19.3, and the newest Forge file is 13.0 for 1.20.2. This guide covers NeoForge only.
  • Players. CurseForge lists the mod as Client & Server, so everyone needs the same file.

Switch the server to NeoForge 1.21.8

  1. Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
  2. Set Server software to NeoForge and Minecraft version to 1.21.8, then press Apply change.
  3. Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.

Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the switch in full.

Install it

  1. Open the Mods tab under Content and select the CurseForge source chip, because the mod is published there.
  2. Search for Lucky Block. It is listed under the author name player_in_distress, and it shows an Install button. Pressing it fails with "Its author only allows downloads through CurseForge's own app. Download it there and upload it in Files." So open the mod's CurseForge page, download the NeoForge 1.21.8 file there and upload it to the mods folder with the File Manager.
  3. Uploading the file yourself skips the install window that adds required add-ons, so add Kotlin for Forge yourself. Search for Kotlin for Forge, choose the 5.x build for 1.21.8 and press Install. The uploaded Lucky Block file loads with Kotlin for Forge 5.12.0 on NeoForge 1.21.8.
  4. Go to Console, press Start and accept the EULA prompt the first time. The server is ready when the console shows Done.

To check it loaded, run give YourName lucky:lucky_block in the Console. That puts a Lucky Block in your inventory.

What players get

The block gives one of over 100 outcomes when it is broken, covering items, chests, monsters, structures, potions and enchantments. It generates naturally in every dimension and is rare. Players can also craft one with 8 gold ingots and a dispenser, and putting other items in the crafting grid changes its luck. The Lucky Sword usually acts like a normal sword, the Lucky Bow sometimes fires something other than an arrow, and the Lucky Potion gives a random effect when thrown.

Change the settings

After the first start, the mod's files are in a lucky folder inside config. The mod's code names the subfolder after the mod version and the loader, so on NeoForge its name ends in -neoforge. Open them in the File Manager, press Save and restart the server.

  • properties.txt holds doDropsOnRightClick, which defaults to false. Set it to true and a Lucky Block also does its drop when right-clicked. It also holds showUpdateMessage, which defaults to false.
  • luck_crafting.txt lists items that shift a block's luck when crafted with it, one per line as item=value, with values from -100 to 100. The mod's own example is diamond=12.
  • natural_gen.txt controls how blocks and structures generate in the world.

Custom Lucky Blocks are add-ons made for the original mod. They go in an addons/lucky folder in the server's top directory, and the mod's add-on documentation explains how to make your own. An add-on used on a server must also be installed on each player's client, because of its custom textures.

Common problems

  • The server stops at start and names Kotlin for Forge. Open the Mods tab, search for Kotlin for Forge and install the 5.x build for 1.21.8.
  • The block does nothing when right-clicked. That is the default. Turn on doDropsOnRightClick or break the block.
  • Players cannot join. They need the same Lucky Block file and Kotlin for Forge on NeoForge 1.21.8. Press Export for players in the Installed view of the Mods tab, then read Join a modded server from your launcher.
  • Something else breaks at start. Fix Minecraft mod and plugin load errors walks through reading the log.
