Install Ice and Fire: Dragons on your server
Install Ice and Fire 2.1.13 beta and Citadel on a Forge 1.20.1 server, see what dragons add, and find the dragon griefing setting.
Ice and Fire, by Alexthe666 and Raptorfarian, adds dragons and other mythical creatures to Minecraft. Fire, ice and lightning dragons roam the world, and you can find their eggs, tame them, ride them and craft gear from their remains. It runs on Forge and NeoForge and needs a library mod called Citadel. This guide installs it on a Forge 1.20.1 server.
Checked against Ice and Fire 2.1.13-1.20.1-beta-5 with Citadel 2.6.3 on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026.
Pick the right build
Modrinth lists Ice and Fire for Forge and NeoForge. Its newest file is 2.1.13-1.20.1-beta-5 for Minecraft 1.20.1, published on 15 August 2024, and every 1.20.1 build is marked beta. The newest builds marked release are 2.1.12 for Minecraft 1.18.2, 1.17.1 and 1.16.5.
To change loader or version, open JAR Manager under More, choose Forge under Server software and 1.20.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel picks the Java version for you. The switch reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content and keep the Modrinth chip selected in the source chip row at the top of the tab. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
- Search for
Ice and Fire. Modrinth names the project "Ice and Fire"; CurseForge names it "Ice and Fire: Dragons". Other results, such as Ice and Fire: Spellbooks and Ice and Fire Delight, are separate projects. - Press Install. When the prompt titled "Needs 1 more add-on" appears, it names Citadel, which Modrinth lists as required. Press Install all.
- Restart from the Console tab. The install toast says "Restart the server to load them".
Open the Installed view to check. Ice and Fire and Citadel should both be listed with no Failed to load badge. The panel installs the newest release of a project when one exists and otherwise the newest beta, so for 1.20.1 it takes the beta file.
Players need it too
Modrinth lists Ice and Fire as required on both the client and the server. Each player installs the same mod and Citadel for Forge 1.20.1. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains a refusal when the versions differ.
What you will find
The project page lists dragon skeletons in desert biomes, dragon roosts and caverns where you can fight dragons and find treasure, dragon eggs in dragon caves, taming and riding, equipment crafted from dragon bones and scales, and a bestiary. Lightning dragons arrived in version 2.0.0.
Settings
The jar defines a server config and a client config. It registers the server one as a common config, so its options, such as dragonGriefing, are in iceandfire-common.toml. The jar describes dragonGriefing as: "2 is no griefing, 1 is breaking weak blocks, 0 is default. This value is also affected by minecrafts mob griefing rule." On a Forge 1.20.1 server the mod wrote iceandfire-common.toml in the config folder and more settings as JSON files in config/iceandfire. It did not write an iceandfire-server.toml. Stop the server before you edit it in the File Manager, then start it again.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: Citadel is missing or older than 2.4.1, which the Ice and Fire jar asks for. Install the newest Citadel for Forge 1.20.1.
- A player cannot join: a different Ice and Fire or Citadel version on their side can cause this. Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains the message.
- Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log. How much RAM does a Minecraft server need helps if the server runs out of memory.
