Install Hunting Dimension on your server
Add the Hunting Dimension 1.0.42 mob farm dimension to a Forge 1.12.2 server with Bookshelf, then tune its mob buffs and loot.
Hunting Dimension, by Darkhax, adds a second dimension that is always night, so hostile mobs spawn there all day. It is built for mob farms, and it runs only on Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2. This guide puts a 1.12.2 Forge server on your plan and installs the mod with the library it needs.
Checked against Hunting Dimension 1.0.42 with Bookshelf 2.3.590 on Forge 1.12.2, October 2026.
What it adds
The project page describes these features:
- A hunting dimension that is eternal night, with significantly less cave generation.
- Mobs in it carry extra armour and health and hit harder. The mod's config lets you raise, lower or remove those buffs.
- Mobs killed there have a configurable chance of extra loot, as if the player had one level of Looting, and a configurable chance of extra experience.
- Portal blocks, crafted by surrounding an arrow with 8 wooden logs. The frame behaves like a Nether portal: light it by right-clicking with most weapons or with flint and steel, step in, then sneak.
- Creeping moss, crafted by surrounding mossy cobblestone with 8 vines, leaves or saplings. Sneak and right-click to record the biome you stand in, then right-click without sneaking inside the hunting dimension to apply it to that chunk.
What the server needs
The mod's Modrinth page lists Forge and Minecraft 1.12.2 only, and the mod declares that it accepts 1.12.2 and nothing else. It needs Bookshelf 2.3.561 or newer as well. Search results also show Hunting Dimension: Second Hunt (a Forge 1.20.1 project by another author) and other mods with similar names, so check that the author is Darkhax.
To put the server on Forge 1.12.2, open JAR Manager under More, choose Forge under Server software and 1.12.2 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel runs 1.12.2 on Java 8 and switches that for you. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content and keep the Modrinth chip selected. The Game version filter starts on your server's version, 1.12.2.
- Search for
Hunting Dimensionand press Install on the one by Darkhax. - A prompt titled "Needs 1 more add-on" names Bookshelf. Press Install all.
- Restart from the Console tab. The install toast says "Restart the server to load them".
The store installs the newest release before any alpha. Version 1.0.43 is an alpha, so the Installed view should show 1.0.42. Check that both Hunting Dimension and Bookshelf are listed with no Failed to load badge.
Players need it too
Modrinth lists the mod as required on both the client and the server. Each player needs a Forge 1.12.2 profile with Hunting Dimension and Bookshelf in their own mods folder. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains a refusal when the mods differ.
Settings
After the first start the mod writes config/huntingdim/huntingdim.cfg and a world_generator_settings.json beside it. Stop the server before you edit either in the File Manager. The general section includes:
dimensionId, the dimension's number.quickPotionWearOff, which makes helpful potion effects on players wear off twice as fast in the dimension.lootingChance, expChanceandexpModifier(the extra experience, 2.5 times by default) for the farm bonuses.buffArmor, buffHealthandbuffAttackfor the mob buffs.mimicSurfaceWorldandworldType, which choose how the dimension's terrain is generated.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: Bookshelf is missing or older than 2.3.561. Install the newest Bookshelf for 1.12.2 and restart.
- No results for the mod: the Game version filter must read 1.12.2, and the server must be on Forge.
- Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
