Install FallingTree on your server

Install FallingTree 26.3.0.4 on a Fabric, Forge or NeoForge server, pick how trees fall, and set sneak, tool and size limits in its config.

Updated 4 min read

FallingTree, by Rakambda, changes how players break trees. Cut one log and the whole tree comes down, or falls as items or blocks, depending on the mode you pick. It runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and the project says that on a server it can be server-side only.

Checked against FallingTree 26.3.0.4 on Minecraft 26.3, October 2026.

What it needs

FallingTree publishes one file per Minecraft version, and the same file serves all three loaders. Version 26.3.0.4 is the newest for 26.3, and the project also lists builds for 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2 and 26.2. The panel runs 26.x on Java 25.

  • Fabric: the file asks for Fabric Loader 0.19.5 or newer and Fabric API 0.160 or newer.
  • Forge: the file asks for Forge 66 or newer.
  • NeoForge: the file asks for NeoForge 26.3.0.0 or newer.

To change loader or version, open JAR Manager under More, choose the loader under Server software and the version under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the steps. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first.

Install it

  1. Open Mods under Content and keep the Modrinth chip selected in the source chip row at the top of the tab. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
  2. Search for FallingTree and press Install.
  3. On Fabric, a Works well with prompt lists Fabric API among optional extras. Modrinth marks it optional, but the project says Fabric users need it, so tick Fabric API and press Install all. On Forge and NeoForge the same prompt may offer Cloth Config, which the project describes as optional on the client for a config screen. Leave it unticked and press the button that reads "Install FallingTree only".
  4. Restart from the Console tab. The install toast says "Restart the server to load it".

Open the Installed view to check. FallingTree should be listed with no Failed to load badge.

Players

Modrinth lists the client side as optional. The project says players don't need the mod on a server, except for the change-speed feature and the enchantment settings. If you use either, each player installs the same version. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side.

Pick how trees fall

The project describes four modes: Instantaneous, Shift down, Fall items and Fall blocks. Instantaneous breaks the whole tree at once, and Shift down breaks the furthest log each time so nobody has to climb. Out of the box the mode is INSTANTANEOUS, and sneaking switches the mod off.

The config file

FallingTree writes config/fallingtree.json. These settings and their defaults come from the mod's code:

  • sneakMode is SNEAK_DISABLE, so sneaking turns the mod off. SNEAK_ENABLE reverses that and IGNORE leaves it always on.
  • Under trees, breakMode is INSTANTANEOUS, maxScanSize is 500, maxSize is 100 and maxSizeAction is ABORT, which leaves a tree alone if it is bigger than maxSize.
  • Under tools, durabilityMode is NORMAL and damageMultiplicand is 1, which applies as much damage as the number of logs broken. By default any tool that extends an axe works.
  • Under player, allowedTags limits the mod to players holding one of the listed tags. An empty list means no limit, and you add a tag with the tag command.
  • Under enchantment, requireEnchantment is false. Since Minecraft 1.21 the enchantment comes from a separate datapack on Modrinth.

Stop the server before you edit the file in the File Manager. The project's alternative is to edit the config through its in-game screen on a client and upload that file to the server.

Updating

Open the Installed view. The panel checks for newer builds by itself. If it finds any, a row shows an Update button and the top button reads Update all (N), which asks you to confirm. Press one, then restart. Each Minecraft version has its own file, so check the store has one before you move to a newer version.

Common problems

  • Trees don't fall: sneaking disables the mod by default, and a tool that isn't an axe isn't recognised unless you list it under tools.
  • Another mod clashes: the project reports an incompatibility with VeinMiner and suggests /veinminer groups remove Wood.
  • The server stops at startup on Fabric: the file requires Fabric API. Install it and restart.
  • Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
