Set up the Artifacts mod on Minecraft
Install Artifacts 15.1.3 on a Fabric or NeoForge 26.1.2 server, add Fabric API by hand, then tune how often the items turn up in chests and on mobs.
Artifacts adds dozens of powerful items that cannot be crafted, from a Cowboy Hat to a Warp Drive, to make exploration more rewarding. Players find them in the world instead. It runs on Fabric or NeoForge, and every player needs it too.
Checked against Artifacts 15.1.3 on Fabric 26.1.2, October 2026.
What you need
- Fabric or NeoForge on Minecraft 26.1.x. Version 15.1.3 is built for 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2. Its files only accept 26.1.x, so it will not load on 26.2 or 26.3, and Modrinth lists no Forge build for it. Pick 26.1.2 in JAR Manager.
- Java 25. JAR Manager shows "Runs on Java 25. We switch it for you." for 26.x.
- Fabric API on a Fabric server. The mod's Fabric build requires it, but its Modrinth entry lists only optional extras, so the install window does not mention Fabric API. Install it yourself first.
- Older Minecraft versions have older Artifacts files: 13.2.x for 1.21.1 and 9.5.x for 1.20.1. The 1.20.1 Fabric file lists Architectury API, Trinkets and Cloth Config API as required, so read the window that opens when you press Install.
Switch the server to 26.1.2
- Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
- Set Server software to Fabric or NeoForge and Minecraft version to 26.1.2, then press Apply change.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.
The screen warns that configuration files may be reset. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the switch in full.
Install it
- Open the Mods tab under Content and leave the Modrinth source chip selected.
- On Fabric, search for Fabric API and press Install on it first.
- Search for Artifacts and press Install on the one by ochotonida. Its optional extras (Trinkets Updated, Cloth Config API) stay unticked unless you want them.
- Go to Console, press Start and accept the EULA prompt the first time.
To see one working, run give YourName artifacts:cowboy_hat in the Console. Artifacts normally come from chests, campsites, mimics and archaeology, so players have to go and look.
Change how often artifacts appear
The mod keeps three files in config/artifacts/: general.toml, items.toml and client.toml. Open general.toml in the File Manager and press Edit:
artifactRaritydefaults to1.0. Higher values make artifacts rarer in chests, and the setting's description says 10000 stops them appearing as chest loot.entityEquipmentChanceis the chance a skeleton, zombie or piglin spawns wearing one. It defaults to0.0015.archaeologyChanceis the chance one generates in suspicious sand or gravel. It defaults to0.0625.
Press Save and restart. The mod's wiki says each item can also be made cosmetic-only in the config, which is what items.toml is for.
The wiki also says the in-game config screen needs Mod Menu on Fabric. On a server you do not need it, because you edit these files directly.
Common problems
- The server stops at start and names fabric-api. Install Fabric API from the Mods tab.
- It refuses to load on 26.2 or newer. The mod's files only accept 26.1.x. Go back to 26.1.2 in JAR Manager.
- Players cannot join. They need the same Artifacts file and loader. Use Export for players on the Mods tab for a zip of what they need, and read Join a modded server from your launcher.
- A crash with NeoForge 26.1.2.100 or newer. The 15.1.3 changelog lists a fix for that, so make sure you have 15.1.3.
