Install the Enlightend mod on your server

Install Enlightend 5.0.14 on a Forge 1.20.1 server, then see what it adds to the End and what your players need to join.

Updated 4 min read

Enlightend, also called Enlightened End, expands the End with new biomes, mobs, crops and materials, plus an Upper End far above the end islands and an Enderneath below them. It is a Forge mod, and every player needs it on their own game.

Checked against Enlightend 5.0.14 on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026.

What you need

  • Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1. Modrinth's newest Enlightend file is 5.0.14, published in November 2023, and it only accepts 1.20.1. The jar asks for Forge 47 or newer. Pick Forge and 1.20.1 in JAR Manager and the panel runs it on Java 17 for you.
  • Nothing else. The 5.0.14 jar declares no other required mods, and Modrinth lists no dependencies for it.
  • Older Minecraft versions. Modrinth also carries Forge builds for 1.19.2 (5.0.12) and 1.18.2 (4.0.0.1). Modrinth lists GeckoLib as required on the 4.x builds. This guide covers 1.20.1 only.
  • A bigger download. The jar is about 21.5 MB, which is under the 100 MB per-file limit for browser uploads, and the Mods tab installs it straight onto the server.
  • Players. Modrinth lists it as required on both the server and the client. Everyone who joins needs the same file.

Switch the server to Forge 1.20.1

  1. Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
  2. Set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.20.1, then press Apply change.
  3. Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.

The screen warns that configuration files may be reset. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the switch in full.

Install it

  1. Open the Mods tab under Content and leave the Modrinth source chip selected.
  2. Search for Enlightend and press Install.
  3. Go to Console, press Start and accept the EULA prompt the first time. The server is ready when the console shows Done.

If you would rather add the file by hand, download enlightend-5.0.14-1.20.1.jar from the project's Modrinth page and upload it into the mods folder with the File Manager, then restart.

To see something from the mod, join and run give YourName enlightened_end:ancient_root in the Console. The mod's id is enlightened_end, which is the name you will see in crash reports and logs.

What players will find

The project page describes these areas, all in the End:

  • The Ennegel Grove, a bouncy biome with springleaves that launch players and Bouncer Nuts that break open into Bouncers. Ringlings eat Bouncers and dig up Ancient Roots.
  • The Enderneath, an upside-down overgrowth under the end islands, with irradium ore and Stalkers, which the page calls some of the toughest mobs in the game.
  • The Ooze Seeps, which holds a new liquid called ooze, Eleviblooms and Gloops.
  • The Upper End, an asteroid-belt region far above the end islands with its own biomes and materials.
Tip

The 5.0.14 jar ships no config file, so there is nothing to edit in config. Take a backup before players start exploring the new End areas, so you can roll back if you decide to remove the mod.

Common problems

  • The server will not start and names enlightened_end. Check the Minecraft version in JAR Manager. The file only accepts 1.20.1.
  • Players cannot join. They need Forge 1.20.1 and the same Enlightend file. Use Export for players in the Installed view of the Mods tab for a zip of what they need, then read Join a modded server from your launcher.
  • The End feels unchanged. The project page describes the new biomes as scattered few and far between the end islands.
  • Lag in the End. Why is my server lagging? and How much RAM does my Minecraft server need? cover the checks.
