Install Combustive Fishing on your server
Install Combustive Fishing 4.0.0.1 on a Forge 1.16.5 server, then craft the Blazing Fishing Rod and fish the lava for the Nether's fish.
Combustive Fishing lets players fish in lava. It adds a Blazing Fishing Rod and two Nether fish, the Combustive Cod and the Searing Swordfish, and it is a Forge mod for Minecraft 1.16. Every player needs it on their own game as well as the server.
Checked against Combustive Fishing 4.0.0.1 on Forge 1.16.5, October 2026.
What you need
- Forge on Minecraft 1.16.5. Version 4.0.0.1 is the newest on Modrinth, uploaded to Modrinth in February 2023, and its jar accepts Minecraft 1.16.3 up to but not including 1.17 with Forge 34 or newer. Pick Forge and 1.16.5 in JAR Manager and the panel runs it on Java 8 for you.
- Nothing else. The jar names no other required mods and Modrinth lists no dependencies.
- Other versions. Modrinth also carries older Forge builds for 1.15.2, 1.14.4, 1.13.2 and 1.12.2. Modrinth lists no Combustive Fishing build for newer Minecraft versions.
- Players. Modrinth lists the mod as required on both the server and the client.
Switch the server to Forge 1.16.5
- Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail.
- Set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.16.5, then press Apply change.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, press and hold Confirm & reinstall, and wait for the console to finish.
The screen warns that configuration files may be reset. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the switch in full.
Install it
- Open the Mods tab under Content and leave the Modrinth source chip selected.
- Search for Combustive Fishing and press Install. The file is only about 113 KB.
- Go to Console, press Start and accept the EULA prompt the first time. The server is ready when the console shows
Done.
To try it straight away, join and run give YourName combustivefishing:blazing_fishing_rod in the Console.
How it plays
The descriptions below are the mod author's own, from the project page, and only the recipes are checked against the jar:
- Blazing Fishing Rod. It behaves like a normal fishing rod but also fishes lava for fish, junk and treasure, with more durability and enchantability. The recipe is a fishing rod with blaze rods in place of the sticks and a magma cream added: three blaze rods on the diagonal where a fishing rod has its sticks, two string down the right side and one magma cream bottom middle.
- Combustive Cod. Found only in Nether lava pools. It is too hot to eat and explodes when thrown. Dropped into water it cools into a Cooled Cod, which is edible.
- Searing Swordfish. Lives in the same lava pools. Its bill, crafted with a blaze rod, makes a Searing Sword.
- Bone Fish. Found in lava in the Nether and the Overworld. It attracts wolves and ocelots and gives slightly more bone meal than a bone.
The mod has no config file in its jar, so there is nothing to tune in config.
A thrown Combustive Cod explodes on impact, so warn players before they carry a stack of them around your spawn.
Common problems
- The server stops at start and names
combustivefishing. Check Minecraft version in JAR Manager. The jar rejects 1.17 and newer. - Players cannot join. They need Forge 1.16.5 and the same file. Use Export for players in the Installed view of the Mods tab, then read Join a modded server from your launcher.
- No fish in lava. The project page says the Blazing Fishing Rod is the one that lets you fish in lava. Check you are holding it.
- Other load errors. Fix Minecraft mod and plugin load errors shows how to read the log.
