Set up Chance Cubes on Minecraft

Install Chance Cubes 5.0.2.517 on a NeoForge 1.21.1 server, craft cubes, tune generation in the config and use the operator commands for rewards.

Updated 4 min read

Chance Cubes is a lucky block mod by TurkeyDev. You craft or find a Chance Cube, break it, and it gives a random reward. Some rewards are helpful, and some are hordes of zombies and death traps. It must be installed on the server and on every player's game.

Checked against Chance Cubes 1.21.1-5.0.2.517 on NeoForge 1.21.1, October 2026.

Pick the right server version

The newest file, 1.21.1-5.0.2.517, was published on 23 May 2025 and is built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. Modrinth also lists Forge builds for older versions. The 1.18.2 build is a release, and the builds for 1.19.2 to 1.20.2 are labelled beta. The mod does not run on Paper, Purpur or Fabric.

For the newest build, open JAR Manager under More, choose NeoForge under Server software and 1.21.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel picks Java 21 for you. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, but make a backup first in the Backups tab.

What it needs

Chance Cubes has no required library mods. Modrinth lists no dependencies for the file, and the jar's neoforge.mods.toml declares none.

Install it

  1. Open Mods under Content and keep the Modrinth chip selected. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
  2. Search for Chance Cubes and press Install on the result by TurkeyDev.
  3. Restart from the Console tab.

Open the Installed view afterwards. Chance Cubes should be listed with no Failed to load badge.

Players need it too

Each player installs the same Chance Cubes file for NeoForge 1.21.1. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains the refusal when versions differ.

Getting cubes

You can craft a Chance Cube by surrounding a lapis block with eight lapis lazuli. They can also generate in the world, on the surface and in caves. Each cube gets a random chance value when it is made. A tiered Chance Pendant in a player's inventory raises the odds, and a Silk Touch Chance Pendant lets a player pick a cube up without triggering it. The mod's wiki has pages for the cubes, the scanner and the pendants.

Rewards can wreck builds, so take a backup before you hand the mod to your players. Create and restore backups shows how.

Settings and commands

The server settings are in chancecubes-server.toml inside config/chancecubes. Stop the server before you edit it in the File Manager. Useful keys:

  • GenerateAsOre and GenerateOnSurface: both true by default, and they control natural cubes.
  • SurfaceGenerationAmount: default 100. A chunk has a 1 in this number chance of a surface cube, so a bigger number means fewer cubes.
  • ChestLoot: true by default, which puts cubes in chest loot.
  • PendantUses: default 32, the uses a pendant has.
  • RewardsEqualChance: false by default. Set it to true to ignore chance values and give every reward the same odds.

The GloballyDisabledRewards setting is true by default. Its comment in the mod says it sends the mod version to the author's web server to check for rewards that are known to be broken.

Custom rewards are JSON files in a custom_rewards folder next to that config. The mod's wiki explains the format. Operators can run /chancecubes commands in the game. /chancecubes version shows the mod version, /chancecubes reload reloads the config and rewards, and /chancecubes disableReward and /chancecubes enableReward turn one reward off or on by name. The mod's code replies to the player who ran the command, so use them in the game rather than the Console.

Common problems

  • The server stops at startup: open the Console and read the last lines. A wrong NeoForge or Minecraft version is the usual cause. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the log.
  • The mod is not in the store: the Game version filter follows your server. Check it matches the version you chose in JAR Manager.
  • A custom reward does not load: the JSON file probably has a typo. Find and fix YAML and JSON config errors helps.
