Increase Item Stack Sizes on Rust

Raise Rust item stack limits with the Stack Size Controller plugin: set a global, category or per-item multiplier from the Console.

Updated 4 min read

Rust's own convar list has no stack size setting, so a server with bigger stacks runs a plugin. This guide uses Stack Size Controller from uMod, which raises stack limits for every item, for a whole category, or for one item. Checked against Stack Size Controller 4.1.3 (released July 2024) on uMod, October 2026.

What you need

The plugin runs on Oxide or Carbon. If your Plugins tab still says Your server runs plain Rust, follow How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server first. That guide also covers the generic install, config editor and permissions, so this one sticks to Stack Size Controller itself.

On load the plugin downloads a list of vanilla stack sizes from GitHub. If the Console shows Unable to get result from GitHub, reload the plugin once the server is fully up, as the plugin's own message suggests.

Install it

  1. Open the Plugins tab and stay on Store.
  2. Search for Stack Size Controller and press Install.
  3. On Oxide, a newly installed plugin stays unloaded until the server restarts or you type oxide.load StackSizeController in the Console. On Carbon it loads by itself.
  4. Watch the Console. The plugin writes StackSizeController.json to its config folder on first load (oxide/config on Oxide, carbon/configs on Carbon).

Change stack sizes from the Console

Type these into the Console tab. Each change is saved to the plugin's config and applied straight away.

CommandWhat it does
stacksizecontroller.itemsearch <part of a name>Lists matching items with their unique id, shortname, category, vanilla stack and custom stack.
stacksizecontroller.setstack <shortname or id> <size>Sets one item's base stack size, for example 1000. A category or global multiplier still multiplies it.
stacksizecontroller.setstack <shortname or id> <number>xGives that one item its own multiplier instead, for example 3x.
stacksizecontroller.setstackcat <category> <multiplier>Multiplies every item in a category.
stacksizecontroller.setallstacks <multiplier>Sets the multiplier for every category at once.
stacksizecontroller.listcategoriesLists the category names.
stacksizecontroller.listcategoryitems <category>Lists the items in one category.

Use itemsearch first: setstack answers Item shortname or id is incorrect when it can't find what you typed. Category and all-stacks multipliers are whole numbers, so use 2 or 5, not 1.5.

Edit the config instead

Open Plugins, switch to Installed, press Config on Stack Size Controller, then Save and Reload plugin. The keys are:

  • GlobalStackMultiplier (default 1) multiplies the base size of every item that isn't covered by an item multiplier or a category above 1.
  • CategoryStackMultipliers holds one multiplier per Rust item category, such as Food or Resources. A category only counts when it is above 1.
  • IndividualItemStackMultipliers holds a multiplier per item shortname.
  • IndividualItemStackSize holds the base size per item shortname, the number the multipliers multiply. The first time the plugin loads it fills this list with the vanilla size of every item, so the file is long. Search it for the item you want.
  • AllowStackingItemsWithDurability (default true) lets items with a condition bar stack. Set it to false to keep them at their vanilla size.
  • RevertStackSizesToVanillaOnUnload (default true) puts every stack limit back to vanilla when the plugin unloads.
  • HidePrefixWithPluginNameInMessages (default false) removes the plugin's name from its replies.

An item's own multiplier beats its category, and a category above 1 beats the global multiplier. For example, with Resources at 5, setstack to 1000 on a resource item gives stacks of 5000; use the x form to give one item its own multiplier instead. A few items are on the plugin's ignore list and never change: water, water.salt, cardtable, hat.bunnyhat and rustige_egg_e.

Tip

Start with one category, such as Resources, rather than a global multiplier. A global multiplier also stretches ammo, medical items and building parts, which changes the feel of the whole server.

Carbon's built-in alternative

Carbon ships a StackManager module that is off by default. c.modules in the Console lists it, and c.setmodule StackManager true enables it (the Console answers StackManager marked enabled.). Its settings live in carbon/modules/StackManager/config.json and include GlobalMultiplier, Categories, Items and Blacklist. In Items, the number is the stack size, for example "wood": 10000. Carbon's docs note that this module forces the server's modded tag on.

Common problems

  1. Nothing changed - on Oxide the plugin may still be unloaded (restart or oxide.load StackSizeController), or the vanilla list didn't download. Check Installed and the Console for red lines, then press Reload plugin.
  2. Sizes went back to normal - the plugin unloaded and RevertStackSizesToVanillaOnUnload is true. Load it again.
  3. A command is ignored - the item is on the ignore list above, or the name is wrong. Run itemsearch and copy the shortname exactly.
  4. Your edit disappeared - a plugin rewrites its config on reload, so a misspelt key is dropped. Compare your spelling with the list above.
