Host a TTT Server on Garry's Mod

Switch a Garry's Mod server to Trouble in Terrorist Town with the Startup preset, add ttt_ maps and set round times and traitor numbers in server.cfg.

Updated 4 min read

Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT) is a social deduction gamemode: most players are innocent, a few are traitors, and everyone is guessing who is who. It ships inside Garry's Mod, so there is nothing to subscribe to before you can host it. You switch the server over in the Startup tab, pick a TTT map and, if you want, adjust the round rules in server.cfg. Checked against the terrortown source in Facepunch's Garry's Mod repository (last changed 13 October 2026), October 2026.

Switch the server to TTT

  1. Open your server and go to the Startup tab.
  2. Find Gamemode presets and press Switch to Trouble in Terrorist Town.
  3. Confirm with Switch gamemode. The preset sets Gamemode to terrortown and Map to the first installed map whose name starts with ttt_.
  4. Restart the server from the dashboard. The switch happens on the next restart.

If you would rather set it by hand, type terrortown into Gamemode and a TTT map name into Map on the same tab. Garry's Mod's own gamemode file lists TTT's maps as the ones whose names start with ttt_.

Warning

With no ttt_ map installed, the preset falls back to gm_construct, which is not a TTT map. Add a TTT map first (below), restart, then use the preset again.

Add TTT maps

TTT maps come from the Steam Workshop. Add the ones you like to your server's collection, link or refresh it in the Workshop tab and restart so the server downloads them. How to add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server covers the collection side. Once a ttt_ map is on the server, the preset above finds it. To pick one yourself, put its file name without the .bsp ending in Map.

By default, after six rounds or 75 minutes on one map, TTT loads the next map from the server's map cycle, which is set by the mapcyclefile console variable.

Change the round rules

TTT's settings are console variables. Put the ones you want to keep in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg:

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open the File Manager and edit garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg.
  3. Add a line per setting, keeping the quotes, then press Save and Start the server.
ttt_roundtime_minutes "12"
ttt_preptime_seconds "20"
ttt_minimum_players "4"

These are the settings most servers touch, with the value TTT uses when you set nothing:

SettingDefaultWhat it does
ttt_roundtime_minutes10Length of a round in minutes
ttt_preptime_seconds30Preparation time before each round
ttt_firstpreptime60Preparation time before the first round after the map loads
ttt_posttime_seconds30Seconds the end-of-round report shows before the next round prepares (never under 5)
ttt_minimum_players2Players needed before a round starts
ttt_traitor_pct0.25Share of players who are traitors, rounded down, at least one
ttt_detective_pct0.13Share of players who are detectives, rounded down
ttt_detective_min_players8Below this many players there are no detectives
ttt_round_limit6Rounds before the map changes
ttt_time_limit_minutes75Minutes before the map changes

Keep Gamemode, Map and the player count in the Startup tab, not in server.cfg, because the server is launched with those values.

Admin tools and common problems

For kicking, banning and slaying rule-breakers, install ULX: ULX and ULib admin commands for Garry's Mod.

  1. The round never starts. TTT waits for ttt_minimum_players players who are able to spawn, which is 2 unless you changed it.
  2. The server starts in Sandbox. Gamemode is still sandbox. Use the preset or type terrortown, then restart.
  3. Nobody ever gets a detective. That is normal under 8 players with the default ttt_detective_min_players.
  4. Your server.cfg change did nothing. The file is read on every start, so restart the server after saving.
