Host a Prop Hunt Server on GMod
Run Prop Hunt: Enhanced on a Garry's Mod server: the Workshop items and ULX it needs, the prop_hunt gamemode, ph_ maps and the round settings.
Prop Hunt is a hide-and-seek gamemode with two teams. Props disguise themselves as the physics props found around the map, and Hunters have to pick the real players out from all the fakes. It does not ship with Garry's Mod, so it arrives through a Steam Workshop collection. This guide uses Prop Hunt: Enhanced, the version still being updated, which the Garry's Mod wiki lists beside the original. Checked against its GitHub repository (last commit 12 July 2026) and its Workshop page, October 2026.
What you need
- A Workshop collection linked to your server. How to add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server covers making one.
- Prop Hunt: Enhanced in that collection.
- ULX and ULib. The project's README lists ULX as a required addon, and its Workshop page highly recommends both. ULX and ULib admin commands for Garry's Mod shows how to add them.
- One or more Prop Hunt maps. Prop Hunt maps have names starting with
ph_. The authors also publish a map and addon pack for the gamemode.
Add it to the server
- Add Prop Hunt: Enhanced, ULX, ULib and your maps to the collection on the Steam Workshop.
- Open the Workshop tab, check the collection is linked and restart the server so it downloads the new items.
Switch to Prop Hunt
The Gamemode presets on the Startup tab cover Sandbox, TTT and DarkRP, so Prop Hunt is set by hand:
- Open the Startup tab.
- Type
prop_huntinto Gamemode. - Type the name of a Prop Hunt map into Map. That is the map's file name without the
.bspending, and it should start withph_. - Restart the server.
Change the game rules
Prop Hunt: Enhanced reads its settings from console variables. The project's own sample server.cfg lists them, so put the ones you want to keep in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg:
- Stop the server.
- Open the File Manager, edit
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfgand add one line per setting, such as these. - Press Save and Start the server.
ph_round_time 240
ph_rounds_per_map 8
ph_hunter_blindlock_time 30The project also describes a Prop Hunt menu opened with F1 for server configuration, which admins can use in game.
Keep Gamemode and Map in the Startup tab, not in server.cfg, because the server is launched with those values.
Common problems
- The server starts in Sandbox. The collection has not downloaded yet, or Gamemode is not exactly
prop_hunt. Restart after checking the Workshop tab. - The round never starts. With
ph_waitforplayerson, which is the default, the round waits until both the Hunters and the Props team have at leastph_min_waitforplayersplayers. - Admin features are missing. Check ULX and ULib are in the collection and the server restarted afterwards.
- A map will not load. Map must match the map's file name exactly. How to add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server explains how maps arrive.
