Host a Star Wars RP Server on GMod
Build a Star Wars roleplay server on DarkRP: Workshop content, your own whitelisted jobs and ranks, and the settings that suit a themed city.
This guide treats Star Wars RP as a theme on top of DarkRP, not a gamemode of its own. DarkRP supplies the jobs, salaries and rules, and Workshop addons supply the models, weapons, vehicles and map. You build it on your server with the tools DarkRP provides for the job. Checked against DarkRP 2.7.0 (GitHub source, July 2026), October 2026.
Start with DarkRP
Get a plain DarkRP server running first, with the Star Wars content added afterwards. Set up DarkRP on your GMod server walks through the collection, the Startup tab and the first restart. Then install the companion addon from Install DarkRP modifications on GMod, because the jobs below live in its files.
Add the Star Wars content
Choose the models, weapons, vehicles and map you want on the Steam Workshop, and add them to the same collection as DarkRP. Read each addon's Workshop page before you add it, because that page lists what it needs. Then restart so the server downloads the lot.
- Everything in the collection loads on the server, and joining players download it, so a big list costs RAM and join time. See the notes in How to add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server.
- The DarkRP preset in the Startup tab only finds maps whose names start with
rp_. If your map is named differently, type its file name, without.bsp, into Map yourself.
Build your jobs
In garrysmod/addons/darkrpmodification/lua/darkrp_customthings/jobs.lua, define the factions and ranks. Use a model from your own addon in model. A rank can require another job first with NeedToChangeFrom, and customCheck restricts a job to a usergroup, which is how you run a whitelist:
TEAM_TROOPER = DarkRP.createJob("Trooper", {
color = Color(200, 200, 200, 255),
model = "models/path/from/your/addon.mdl",
description = [[A frontline trooper.]],
weapons = {"weapon_fists"},
command = "trooper",
max = 0,
salary = 50,
admin = 0,
vote = false,
hasLicense = false,
})
TEAM_CAPTAIN = DarkRP.createJob("Captain", {
color = Color(80, 120, 200, 255),
model = "models/path/from/your/addon.mdl",
description = [[You lead a squad.]],
weapons = {"weapon_fists"},
command = "captain",
max = 2,
salary = 90,
admin = 0,
vote = false,
hasLicense = false,
NeedToChangeFrom = TEAM_TROOPER,
customCheck = function(ply) return ply:GetUserGroup() == "captain" or ply:IsAdmin() end,
CustomCheckFailMsg = "You need to be whitelisted as a captain.",
})Usergroups such as captain are created with your admin mod. ULX and ULib admin commands for Garry's Mod covers it. To group jobs in the F4 menu or keep a job out of view, see Hide jobs in the DarkRP F4 menu.
If you disable DarkRP's default Citizen job in disabled_defaults.lua, also change the GAMEMODE.DefaultTeam = TEAM_CITIZEN line in jobs.lua. That line sets the team players spawn into, so point it at a job of your own.
Money, laws and the name
The DarkRP tab sets Starting money, Payday every and Door price, and the default laws on the board. Open it after the server runs DarkRP. To run the server under a Star Wars name instead of DarkRP, see Rename DarkRP on your GMod server.
Common problems
- Players see errors or missing models. They have not downloaded your addons. Open the Workshop tab to bring the player list up to date, then restart.
- A job does not show up. Its
customCheckoradminsetting may be hiding it from you, or the server was not restarted after the edit. - A Lua error appears in the Console. DarkRP explains mistakes in your files when the server starts. Fix the line it names and restart.
