Edit Loot Tables on Your Rust Server

Edit Rust loot tables with the BetterLoot plugin and the Looty web editor: install it, import a table, block items and reload.

Updated 4 min read

Rust's server settings only scale loot in a few places, such as deepsea.loot_scale for the deep sea and server.npcammolootmultiplier for ammo from NPC loot, and none lets you edit what a given container drops. Editing loot tables means running a loot plugin. This guide uses BetterLoot from uMod, which keeps every table in a data file and has a web editor, Looty, to build them. Checked against BetterLoot 4.5.4 (released 20 October 2026) on uMod, October 2026.

What you need

BetterLoot runs on Oxide, so set that up first with How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server. That guide covers the generic install, the config editor and oxide.grant (c.grant on Carbon). Take a backup from the Backups tab before you change loot, as the plugin rewrites its data files.

Install BetterLoot

  1. Open the Plugins tab, stay on Store, search for BetterLoot and press Install.
  2. On Oxide, a newly installed plugin stays unloaded until the server restarts or you type oxide.load BetterLoot in the Console. Do that now. On Carbon it loads by itself, and c.load BetterLoot or c.reload BetterLoot do it by hand.
  3. Watch the Console until the plugin loads. It can log a pointer to the Looty editor at https://looty.cc/betterloot.
  4. Grant yourself the admin permission from the Console, using your own name or SteamID64. A permission only exists once its plugin is loaded, so do this after step 3:
oxide.grant user "YourName" betterloot.admin

On Carbon, oxide.grant prints nothing and does nothing. Use Carbon's own command instead:

c.grant user "YourName" betterloot.admin

BetterLoot's settings are in oxide/config/BetterLoot.json on Oxide and carbon/configs/BetterLoot.json on Carbon. Its loot lives in oxide/data/BetterLoot (carbon/data/BetterLoot on Carbon), in LootTables.json, LootGroups.json, Blacklist.json and GatherRates.json.

Build tables in Looty

  1. Open looty.cc/betterloot in your browser and build the tables you want.
  2. Load them into the server with the table ID Looty gives you. In game, with the permission above, type:
/looty "your-looty-id"

From the Console tab, the command is looty your-looty-id. BetterLoot only accepts the console version from an RCON connection, and says Error: Should not execute command outside of RCON. otherwise. The panel's Console sends your commands over RCON. 3. The plugin replies Loaded editor configuration successfully. It writes LootTables.json, and LootGroups.json and GatherRates.json too when your Looty table includes them, then reloads its loot.

If the import fails, BetterLoot keeps the previous configuration and logs the reason in the Console.

Edit the files by hand

You can also open oxide/data/BetterLoot/LootTables.json (carbon/data/BetterLoot/LootTables.json on Carbon) in the File Manager. Each container's table is keyed by its prefab path, for example assets/prefabs/misc/supply drop/supply_drop.prefab for the supply drop, and a table only applies while its Enabled is true. After saving, press Reload plugin on the plugin's Config window or run:

oxide.reload BetterLoot

On Carbon the command is c.reload BetterLoot.

A mistake in these files can stop the plugin loading, so keep a copy first. BetterLoot has its own copy commands, bl-backup and bl-restore, which work in chat for players with the admin permission.

Block an item

To stop an item dropping at all, use the blacklist in game as an admin:

  • /blacklist lists the blocked items.
  • /blacklist additem <shortname> blocks one.
  • /blacklist deleteitem <shortname> unblocks it.

The list is saved to Blacklist.json.

Warning

Importing a Looty table replaces the loot tables you had. Use bl-backup or the Backups tab first so you can go back.

Common problems

  1. "You are not authorized to use this command" - the admin permission isn't granted. Run oxide.grant above (c.grant on Carbon), then try again.
  2. The table ID wasn't found - BetterLoot answers that the requested table ID was not found. Check you copied the ID exactly from Looty.
  3. The plugin unloaded itself - if it can't start, it logs Error initializing plugin and unloads, and asks you to check your configuration and data files against the Looty editor. Rebuild the tables in Looty and import them again.
