How to unlock farming in Enshrouded
Rescue the Farmer to unlock the Seedbed and Farm Soil, then learn how seedlings, soil, the Watering Can and farm animals work, plus the server settings.
Farming in Enshrouded is locked until you rescue a survivor. Emily Fray, the Farmer, crafts the Seedbed, where every seedling is made, and the Farm Soil, which speeds up most plants, so you cannot make seedlings at your base until she is there. This guide covers how to unlock her, how seedlings work and what your server's settings change.

Unlock the Farmer
Farming unlocks through the quest Growing Stronger Together, in which you rescue the Farmer, Emily Fray. The official wiki and MetaForge say you rescue her from an Ancient Vault, and the wiki lists that vault under the Springlands. The official wiki lists two objectives:
- Find the Farmer in her Ancient Vault.
- Summon the Farmer to your base.
You summon survivors with the Summoning Staff, which the official wiki and MetaForge describe as summoning rescued survivors into your bases around a Flame Altar. You craft the Summoning Staff by hand from one piece of Twigs once you have rescued a survivor.
The Farmer's rescue unlocks the recipes for the Seedbed and for Farm Soil, and she crafts both.
Seedlings and soil
Plants are grown from seedlings, and seedlings are made at the Seedbed:
- Rescue the Farmer, then craft a Seedbed and place it in your base.
- Harvest or collect a crop. Both the official wiki and the MetaForge database say a seedling recipe unlocks once you have the Seedbed recipe and have obtained the crop, for example Purple Berries for a Berry Bush Seedling.
- Craft the seedling at the Seedbed. MetaForge lists the Berry Bush Seedling as giving five per craft.
- Plant it in soil. The Farmer crafts Farm Soil, and the official wiki says it is placed with the Construction Hammer. The same plant takes a different time on different soils, and MetaForge lists the times for each seedling.
Emily Fray's own in-game advice, as recorded by the official wiki, is that plants grow faster in their preferred soil and that some special plants need water to grow at all.
The Watering Can shows a planted seedling's growth stage and soil information. The Blacksmith crafts it. The official wiki says it is not needed for growth and does not speed it up, but the official wiki and Keen Games' Wake of the Water notes say it lets you limit how far a plant grows, which suits decorative plants.
Animals
The Farmer's quest Animal Farming walks you through your first farm animal. The official wiki's steps are to make or obtain goat bait with the Farmer, tame a goat, place it in your base and craft a goat feeder and a farm animal pillow for it. The quest text says two happy animals with a spare bed can breed.
What changed in 1.0
Keen Games' 1.0 notes say plant growth times were redesigned and lowered overall, with large plants and trees taking longer and small plants being faster. The same notes say farm animals now produce their goods significantly faster.
On your server
Settings in the Server Settings tab speed farming up or slow it down. Each applies only with the Custom difficulty preset.
Enshrouded server settings walks through the tab. Cooking comes next: the Enshrouded cooking guide covers the Farmer's stations. If you do not have a server yet, see Enshrouded server hosting.
