Turn off Minecraft advancement messages

Stop advancement announcements in chat with one game rule from the Console, using the right name for your version, and turn them back on later.

Updated 3 min read

Every time a player earns an advancement, Minecraft announces it to everyone in chat. On a busy server that is a steady stream of messages, and on a quiet one it can give away what someone just found. One game rule turns the announcements off for the whole server. The rule only controls whether advancements are announced in chat.

Checked against Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, October 2026.

Turn the messages off

  1. Check your Minecraft version in the JAR Manager tab. The rule has a different name before and after 1.21.11.
  2. Open the Console tab.
  3. Type the command for your version in the Send a command box, without a leading slash, and press Enter.

On 1.21.11 and newer, including 26.x:

gamerule show_advancement_messages false

On 1.21.10 and older:

gamerule announceAdvancements false

Rule names are case-sensitive, so copy them exactly.

Check the current setting

Run the same command with no value to read the rule without changing it:

gamerule show_advancement_messages

The rule starts as true, so announcements are on until you turn them off.

Turn them back on

Run the command again with true:

gamerule show_advancement_messages true

Run it in the game instead

Operators can also type the command in the game's chat, with the leading slash: /gamerule show_advancement_messages false. Make someone an operator from the Players tab, using Operators and Make operator. Whitelist players and set operators has the steps. The Console tab is simpler for a one-off change, because it needs no one to be online.

Why the name changed

Minecraft 1.21.11 moved all game rules into a registry and renamed them from camel case to lowercase words joined by underscores. announceAdvancements became show_advancement_messages at the same time. If you copy an older guide's command onto a new server, the server rejects the name.

Quiet other chat messages too

Two more game rules cut chat noise the same way. Their names follow the same version split.

Both start as true. Set one to false with the same gamerule command, for example gamerule show_death_messages false. Change game rules on your Minecraft server covers more rules and the 1.21.11 renames.

If the messages are still there

  • The command was rejected. The rule name does not match your version. Use the other command from the section above.
  • Death messages still show. This rule covers advancement announcements only. Death messages have their own rule, in the table above.
