Set a Minecraft server resource pack

Pick a pack from Modrinth or paste your own https link in the Config Editor, let the panel save its checksum, and make players load it on join.

Updated 3 min read

A server resource pack gives every player the same textures, sounds or models without anyone installing files by hand. You set a download link in server.properties, and the game offers the pack to each player when they join. The Config Editor has a Resource pack section built for this, with a Modrinth picker and a link checker.

Checked against Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, October 2026.

Pick a pack from Modrinth

  1. Open Config Editor in the Content group of the left rail and scroll to Resource pack.
  2. Under Pick a pack from Modrinth, type a name into Search resource packs and press Search.
  3. Click Apply pack on the one you want. This writes the pack's link and its SHA-1 checksum into server.properties together.
  4. Restart the server from the Console tab. Players get the pack on their next join.

The panel takes the pack's newest release and does not match it to your Minecraft version. Check the pack's Modrinth page lists the version your server runs.

Use your own pack

You need a .zip hosted at a public https link that downloads the file directly. The panel refuses a file larger than 250 MB.

  1. In Resource pack URL, paste the link.
  2. Press Check link. The panel downloads the file, works out its SHA-1 checksum and saves both the link and the checksum. The button stays greyed out until the link starts with https://.
  3. Optionally fill Prompt message, a custom message for the accept or decline screen. The Minecraft wiki says the message shows when the pack is required and that the field expects chat component syntax.
  4. Switch on Require the pack if players who decline should be disconnected.
  5. Press Save changes for the section, then restart.

The checksum is a SHA-1 digest of the pack that the game uses to verify the file. Without it the pack cannot be verified.

Update or remove the pack

To update, replace the file at the same link, then press Check link again so the saved checksum matches the new file. Restart afterwards.

To remove it, empty Resource pack URL and Pack checksum (SHA-1), press Save changes and restart. With no link, the server offers no pack.

If it doesn't work

  • "That link redirects. Use the file's final address." The panel does not follow redirects. Open the link in a browser and copy the address it ends on.
  • "Use an https:// link." Only secure links are accepted.
  • "The file is bigger than 250 MB." Shrink the pack, for example by compressing large textures.
  • A page opens instead of a download. Share pages that preview the file are not direct links. Use a host that serves the .zip itself.
  • "The link answered 404" or another number. The address is wrong or the file has moved. Test it in a browser.
  • The pack is not offered after a restart. Open Config Editor again and check Resource pack URL still holds your link.
Tip

Join and accept the pack yourself before you switch on Require the pack. With it on, any player who declines is disconnected.

For every other option in the file, including resource-pack-prompt and require-resource-pack, see server.properties explained. Packs that change game data rather than looks are data packs: see Install a data pack on your Minecraft server.
