The rarest animals in Minecraft
Which animals are hardest to find in Minecraft Java, with the spawn weights, biomes and special routes behind each one in the 26.3 game data.
Some animals in Minecraft are common enough to find on any walk, and a few are hard enough to track down that finding one is worth a screenshot. This guide lists the animals that are rarest in Java Edition, why each one is hard to find and where to look, using the spawn data in Mojang's own game files.
Checked against Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, October 2026. Spawn numbers change between versions, so treat the weights below as the 26.3 values.
How animal spawning works
Every biome has a list of animals that can spawn there, and each entry has a weight. When the game wants to spawn an animal, it picks from that biome's list in proportion to the weights. An animal with weight 1 in a biome where others have weight 10 or 12 turns up far less often. Each entry also has a group size.
An animal can also be rare because it has no entry anywhere, which means it only exists through a special route, or because only one biome lists it.

Find the biome
If you are an operator, you can ask the game for the nearest biome of a type. Run this in game, where the answer appears in your chat:
/locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fieldsSwap in minecraft:bamboo_jungle, minecraft:ice_spikes, minecraft:desert or any other biome ID. The game replies with the coordinates and distance of the nearest match, or says it could not find one within a reasonable distance. Teleport there with /tp and the coordinates it gave.
Bring one home
A rare animal in a faraway biome is hard to enjoy. Mooshrooms, pandas and camels can all be bred, so one find can become a herd, and you can place a display animal yourself with a command. Summon custom entities with /summon shows how to name one and keep it from despawning, and Summon a mob with no AI shows how to hold it in place for a display.
Polar bears cannot be bred, and baby polar bears only appear when a group spawns. If you want polar bears at home, you have to find them in the wild.
On your server
The spawn lists are part of the game data, so the panel has no setting that makes a rare animal more common. A different seed gives a different map, which Change your world seed covers, and Find your world seed shows how to read the current one. How many animals a world keeps at once is a separate limit, covered in Change mob spawn rates and limits.
