Link Minecraft and Discord with DiscordSRV

Install DiscordSRV from the Plugins tab, create a Discord bot, set the token and channel in config.yml, and bridge chat both ways.

Updated 4 min read

DiscordSRV is a plugin that connects your Minecraft server to a Discord server. What players type in game appears in a Discord channel, what people type in that channel appears in game, and you can optionally stream the server console to a second channel. It runs on Paper, Purpur and Folia, so it needs a Plugins tab on your server. You also need to create a Discord bot, which is a few steps in Discord's developer portal.

Checked against DiscordSRV 1.30.5 on Paper 26.3, October 2026.

Before you start

Install the plugin

  1. Open the Plugins tab and keep the Modrinth source button selected.
  2. Search for DiscordSRV and install the project named DiscordSRV by Scarsz. Several add-ons for it have similar names, such as InteractiveChat DiscordSRV Addon, and they are separate projects.
  3. Press Install, then Restart on the Console tab. The first start creates the plugins/DiscordSRV folder with its config files.

Create the Discord bot

These steps follow DiscordSRV's own documentation at docs.discordsrv.com, last updated on 3 August 2025. Discord can rename things in its developer portal, so if a label on your screen differs, that page is the reference.

  1. Go to the Discord Developer Portal at discord.com/developers/applications and press New Application.
  2. Open the Installation tab, turn off User Install and set Install Link to None.
  3. On the bot page, switch on both Server Members Intent and Message Content Intent. DiscordSRV needs the second one to forward Discord messages into Minecraft.
  4. Press Reset Token and copy the token. Leave Public Bot unticked so nobody else can add your bot to their servers.

Treat the token like a password. Anyone who has it can control your bot, so reset it if it leaks.

Add the bot to your Discord server

Copy the Application ID from the application's General Information page. Open https://discordapp.com/oauth2/authorize?scope=bot+applications.commands&client_id= with your ID on the end, pick your server and press Authorize.

Next, create a role in your Discord server settings. The documentation suggests giving it the Administrator permission for simplicity, and it lists the narrower permissions each feature needs, such as View Channel and Send Messages for any channel you point DiscordSRV at, and Embed Links for embedded messages. Give the role to the bot under Members.

Copy the channel ID

In Discord, open User Settings, then Advanced, and switch on Developer Mode. Right-click the channel you want for chat and choose Copy ID.

Edit the config

  1. Open the File Manager, go to plugins/DiscordSRV and open config.yml.
  2. Set BotToken to your token, in quotes: BotToken: "your-token-here".
  3. Set Channels to your channel ID. global is the in-game channel name for plain chat, not a Discord channel name:
Channels: {"global": "123456789012345678"}
  1. Press Save, then Restart. DiscordSRV's file says a restart is needed after you change the token.

Check it works

Type a message in the Discord channel and look for it in game chat, then chat in game and look in Discord. After later changes to Channels, run discord reload in the Console instead of restarting. The same command also works in game as /discord reload. /discord link ties a player's Minecraft account to their Discord account.

Warning

If you set DiscordConsoleChannelId, DiscordSRV streams the console to that channel and runs messages sent there as console commands. Only let staff you trust write in it.

If it does not work

  • The plugin is red in the plugins list. It failed to load or start. Read logs/latest.log or press Download Log in the Console and search for DiscordSRV.
  • Discord messages do not reach Minecraft. Check that Message Content Intent is on and that the bot can see the channel.
  • Minecraft messages do not reach Discord. Without a chat plugin, plain chat goes to the global entry in Channels. The value must be the channel's ID number, not its name.
  • Nothing connects. Paste the token again in full, inside the quotes, or reset it in the developer portal and paste the new one.
