Spawn items on your Valheim server

The base game blocks spawn on a dedicated server. How to use the Server Devcommands mod, and the spawn syntax.

Updated 4 min read

Spawning an item in Valheim means typing the spawn command in the in-game console and creating an item or creature. It is a cheat command, and in the base game cheat commands do not work on a dedicated server. To spawn items on your hosted world you need a mod that gives server admins that ability. This guide shows how, and what to type once it works.

Checked against Valheim 1.0.20 (patch of 15 October 2026) and Server Devcommands 1.116.0 on Thunderstore, October 2026.

Why the plain game will not do it

The Valheim wiki lists spawn among the cheat commands and states that cheat commands work in single player or a world you host yourself, not on a dedicated server. Being on the admin list does not change that. Valheim admin and dev commands explains the difference.

What you need

  • Your own ID on the admin list. Follow Add admins to your Valheim server.
  • BepInEx on the server, installed from the Mods tab. Install BepInEx and mods on your Valheim server covers that, including setting Crossplay to 0, because console players cannot install mods.
  • The Server Devcommands mod by JereKuusela. Its Thunderstore page says it enables devcommands and utilities for server admins, and that it goes on the admin's own computer and, for full features, on the server as well.

Set it up

  1. Take a backup in the Backups tab first. Mods change how a world is saved.
  2. Open the Mods tab, search the Store view for Server devcommands and click Install on Server devcommands by JereKuusela. If a No backup yet box opens, go to Backups first, or choose Install Server devcommands anyway.
  3. Restart the server.
  4. On your own computer, install the same mod the way you install any Valheim mod, so the admin client has it too.
  5. Join the server and press F5 to open the console.

The mod's page says it tries to switch devcommands on for you when you join a server, as long as the admin check passes, so you can skip typing devcommands. If a command is refused, type devcommands and press enter to toggle cheat commands on.

Spawn something

The syntax, from the wiki, is spawn [name] [amount] [level]. The name is not case sensitive. Examples:

  • spawn AxeFlint spawns one flint axe.
  • spawn Wood 50 spawns 50 separate pieces of wood, not one stack.
  • spawn Coins 100 spawns coins.

The level is optional. For creatures, a higher level means more stars. The wiki's Item IDs page lists the name for every item and creature, such as AxeFlint. A name that ends with a star, such as Axe*, spawns everything whose name contains the text, which can flood the ground, so test with a single name first.

Warning

The wiki warns that spawning thousands of items can freeze the game while the drops stack, and that high level creatures (level 10 and up) can freeze it when they die and drop thousands of items. Spawn small amounts.

What spawning does to your world

Valheim marks items made with cheats as cheated. Iron Gate's patch notes say cheated stackable items no longer stack with regular items, so spawned materials sit in their own stack. That is normal. Keep a backup from before you started in case you want to undo it.

If it does not work

  • Nothing spawns. Check the mod is installed on your own computer, which its page says the admin needs, and on the server, which its page says full features need. Check your ID is on the Admins list, and that you restarted after changing the list.
  • The name is not found. Check the spelling against the wiki's Item IDs page.
  • A friend cannot join after you added the mod. Most Valheim mods must also be installed by every player who joins, and console players cannot install mods at all. Test with one non-admin friend before you invite the whole crew.
