Set up OpenAudioMc on your Minecraft server

Install OpenAudioMc, link it to your account, play your first sound, set up voice chat channels and permissions for browser-based audio.

Updated 4 min read

OpenAudioMc plays music and sound effects to your players, and adds proximity voice chat, without mods or a resource pack. Each player opens a personal link in a web browser, and the audio plays there. It is a plugin, so it runs on Paper or Purpur. The jar comes from its SpigotMC page, so you upload it yourself.

Checked against OpenAudioMc 6.10.17 (released on 17 April 2026) in October 2026. The SpigotMC page lists tested versions up to 1.21, so on a newer Minecraft version, check the plugin works before you tell players to rely on it.

What you need

  • A Paper or Purpur server on Minecraft 1.8.8 or newer, which is the plugin's stated minimum. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab, so switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
  • online-mode switched on. The requirements page asks for it, and the Config Editor tab lists it as Online mode.
  • A free OpenAudioMc admin account for you. Players do not need one.
  • A stable connection to OpenAudioMc's own services. The requirements page lists no port for you to open.

Install it

  1. Download the latest jar from the OpenAudioMc page on SpigotMC.
  2. In the File Manager, open the plugins folder, click Upload and choose the jar.
  3. Restart from the Console tab with Restart, then type plugins. OpenAudioMc should be listed.
  4. Make yourself an operator: open the Players tab, choose Operators and click Make operator, or run op <name> in the Console. A permissions plugin works too: the installation page says to give your admin group the openaudiomc.* node (see Set up LuckPerms).
  5. Join the server and type /oa accept in chat to accept the terms.
  6. Register an admin account on the OpenAudioMc website, then type /oa link in the game. It gives you a unique link that ties your server to your account.

Players get their web client link automatically on their first join, with no permission node. The installation page says they can type /audio any time to get it again. If /audio is refused on your server, grant openaudiomc.commands.audio, which the permissions page lists for that command.

Play your first sound

The command is /oa play <selector> <source> [options]. It plays the source once for the selected players. For example:

  • /oa play @a files:welcome.mp3 plays a file for everyone.
  • /oa play @p files:background-music.mp3 {"loop":true,"fadeTime":2000} loops a file for one player with a fade-in.

The source can be a file in your OpenAudioMc account, written as files:name.mp3, a public SoundCloud link, or the full URL of a file you host yourself. Account storage is 200 MB on the free tier. Self-hosted files should be MP3 or OGG, served over HTTPS, with CORS headers and support for range requests. The openaudiomc.commands.play permission is needed for /oa play, and it defaults to operators.

Voice chat channels

Static voice channels live in plugins/OpenAudioMc/config.yml, in the list under static-channels. Each entry needs a name, a permission and requirePermission. Set requirePermission to false for a public channel. Restart the server after you change the list.

Players use /channel join {channel}, /channel leave and /channel list. A channel's owner invites someone with /channel invite {player}, and the invited player has 30 seconds to accept. Setting options.enable-channel-command to false turns the channel command off.

Permissions

  • Operator status or the openaudiomc.* node gives access to all commands. That is the quick setup from the installation page.
  • For finer control, the permissions page describes openaudiomc.commands.*, which covers every admin subcommand, and openaudiomc.commands.<subcommand>, which covers one.
  • openaudiomc.commands.audio is the node for /audio, as above.
  • openaudiomc.speakers.create, .destroy and .manage control speaker blocks.

Regular players need no permissions to get their link and use the web client.

Common problems

  • /audio is refused. Grant openaudiomc.commands.audio.
  • Reloads and early joins. The requirements page says the server may not reload unexpectedly and may not accept clients before it has finished starting. As a precaution, let the Console finish starting before players join, and prefer Restart from the Console tab to a plugin reload.
  • Some features are missing. Check that Online mode is on in the Config Editor.
Warning

Files you upload to your OpenAudioMc account are stored on OpenAudioMc's service, not on your server, and its terms apply to them. Its compliance page says uploaded content is not moderated by the site owner.
