Set up Minepacks on your Minecraft server

Install Minepacks from CurseForge on Paper or Purpur, give players backpack permissions, tune the config and fix the common problems.

Updated 4 min read

Minepacks gives every player a private backpack: an extra chest-sized inventory they open with a command or a shortcut item. Its size is set by permission, from one row to six. This guide installs it on a Paper or Purpur server from CurseForge, gives players access and covers the main settings.

Checked against Minepacks 2.5.9.1 on Paper 26.1.2, October 2026. Its release notes say it was updated for Minecraft 26.3, and its CurseForge file lists Minecraft 1.8 to 26.3.

Before you start

  • You need a Paper or Purpur server, which show a Plugins tab.
  • Minepacks is a plugin for Bukkit, Spigot and Paper. The Bukkit page and the GitHub project are the project's own downloads. The Plugins tab can search CurseForge.
  • Take a backup from the Backups tab first.

Install Minepacks

  1. Select Plugins, then pick the CurseForge button.
  2. Type Minepacks in the search box and press Install on the Minepacks row (author GeorgH93).
  3. Open the Console tab and press Restart.

If the CurseForge source returns no results, download Minepacks-2.5.9.1-Release.jar from the Minepacks releases on GitHub, upload it into the plugins folder with Upload in the File Manager, then restart. That is the build published on Spigot and Bukkit. Minepacks-2.5.9.1-Standalone.jar also runs on its own. Do not take the plain Minepacks-2.5.9.1.jar: it needs the PCGF PluginLib plugin installed or it will not run.

The plugin creates plugins/Minepacks with a config.yml and a lang folder.

Let players use backpacks

Backpacks are off for everyone at first. backpack.use defaults to false, so nobody can open one until you grant a permission. You have two ways.

With a permissions plugin. Give your default group backpack.user. It includes backpack.use, backpack.size.1, backpack.sort and backpack.clean. For more rows, add backpack.size.2 up to backpack.size.6, or give backpack.userBig for the largest size. See Set up LuckPerms on your Minecraft server.

Without one. The Minepacks FAQ suggests a permissions.yml file next to the server jar and the plugins folder. Create it on your computer with this text, upload it to the root folder with Upload in the File Manager, then restart:

minepacks:
  default: true
  children:
    backpack.user: true
    backpack.size.6: true

That gives every player a six-row backpack.

Use it

  • /backpack opens your backpack, and /bp is its alias. By default players are also given a head item named "Backpack" that opens it when they interact with it.
  • /backpack sort sorts the contents and /backpack clean clears it. They need backpack.sort and backpack.clean.
  • Admins have /backpack reload, /backpack update and /backpack version. backpack.reload, backpack.update and backpack.others (see other players' backpacks) default to operators.

Settings

Stop the server and open plugins/Minepacks/config.yml in the File Manager. The defaults include:

  • MaxSize: 6, the largest backpack in rows. Permissions above it are ignored.
  • DropOnDeath: true, so a backpack's contents drop when its owner dies. Give players backpack.keepOnDeath to stop that. Operators have it by default, so test the drop with a normal player account.
  • AllowedGameModes: [ "SURVIVAL" ]. Add CREATIVE if builders need it.
  • Cooldown with Command: -1, which turns the reopen cooldown off.
  • ItemShortcut with Enabled: true, the item that opens the backpack.
  • Shulkerboxes with PreventInBackpack: true.

Under Database, Type: SQLite is the default and needs no setup. Files keeps one file per player. The MySQL option needs a database, and plans don't include MySQL databases, so leave it alone.

Save, then run backpack reload in the Console tab or restart.

Tip

Minepacks has an auto-updater, Misc.AutoUpdate.Enabled, on by default. Set it to false if you would rather update from the Installed view of the Plugins tab. /backpack update still checks by hand.

Common problems

  • Players cannot open a backpack. They need backpack.use, which backpack.user grants. It defaults to false, even for operators.
  • Creative players are refused. The default allows survival only. Edit AllowedGameModes.
  • The backpack item appears in a death chest. Set ItemShortcut.ImproveDeathChestCompatibility to true. Set up AngelChest on your Minecraft server covers a death-chest plugin that works with Minepacks.
